    Hi Shane

I am back doing another edit on XDCAM HD. I have 9 steams which I have converted to Pro Res Proxies so the data rate is about 5.8mbs. The streams play ok in the viewer, However as soon as I click on another stream to make an edit point on the timeline, I get the “Warning – dropped frames” message. Everything is set to what it should be (dynamic playback, closed other seqs & projects) and so I tried to lower the data rate in the proxy setting in Compressor and create new proxy files. But I can’t seem to adjust the data rate in the Pro Res proxy setting, even after I have duplicated the setting.. HAve you had this problem? Is there a compressor setting I could try? Does Pro Res proxy even work?

I am on a 2×2.93 Quad Intel with 8GB DDR3 RAM running from an xserve with 32TB Sonnet drives on a fibre connection so the system speed should not be an issue.

    Cheers

    Si

Hey. We hve still had problems. In fact they are even worse when you add in other codecs such as ex3. What worked best in a recent show was to convert all th footage to pro res proxy files. I was amazed at how good the quality was and actually if you keep the file names the same via compressor it reconnects to original media quite eallsily at the end. Obviously I would rather fcp be able to handle the native codec bit this was quite easy and pro res is quite quick to convert to.

Interesting chat. Well its been a few months since I first posted this link and I can’t say it has got much better. I am now running a faster XSAN with fibre connections and I still have drop out on XDCAM 422 multiclips. ProRes is worse as it is more processor heavy. I have only 3 clips and it drops frames telling me my drives may be slow – I DON’T THINK SO! I agree this is a flaw elsewhere in the AJA Kona 3. Let me know how you get on with this!

    Hi Chris

I am having the same problem, did you (or anybody and Creative Cow) find a useful solution to this?

    Thanks

But surely XDCAM, with a data rate of 7.1 mbps is not overly taking – even with 7 streams- thats like 2 ProRes streams. This is quite a flaw for FCP. What do they do when people are cutting concerts with 16 cameras!

I have a 16 drive RAID with 16TB storage (Sonnet Fusion RX1600Fibre with Quad 8GB-0TB) running using fibre cables through Gigabit switch (Netgear GS108 8 Port Compact Gigabit Switch ) so speed should not really be an issue surely?

    Hi Jeremy

This is true, but sometimes when you have a sequence which contains clips of different field dominance, they can sometimes ‘judder’ on playback. If I am not monitoring at full frame, surely this might slip through and end up being played out onto tape?

    Thanks again

    Hi Jeremy

I just had another thought – is pausing on a single field rather than a full frame going to be problematic later on – should I be viewing the full frame to make sure it looks correct when it is played out to tape?

    Thanks

    Hi John

Yes it was a PDW700 but I am not sure of the software. I will do some upgrades just in case.

Doe the filed dominance matter – it looks fine on my monitor.

    Thanks
