Hi John,

I know this thread is 2 years old but I just want to verify that when you copy a project to a new library on another drive and then consolidate — that it actually COPIES the media to the new library, leaving the original drive in tact?

So conceivably I could give the 2 drives to 2 different editors and both would have all of the media for those projects?

Yes! Most of the media is inside the library, though I suspect not all of it. Like I said, it’s been through many hands over several years, originating on Legacy 7. It’s large – close to a TB. Not how I would have set it up but I’ve just come on to get them to the mix!

Thanks for the response…..problem is the error message says it will change edits throughout the “library”…..so duping the project may not be enough precaution.

When/if I find the solution I’ll let y’all know.

Hey Jeremy,

That’s a great suggestion and would have been my first choice but it’s an over bloated library, years in the making, that’s had many hands on it and was migrated from 7. It is now days away from a mix for a screening coming up really soon. I was hoping someone had done it before and would just say – “yeah, go ahead, nothing other than volumes will be affected!!!” ????

Hi all,

I realize that this post is 2 years old, but this seems related…..
I have an issue with my Audio Tool changing the pans on sequences that I haven’t changed them on!

I have set one of my sequences to pan music left and everything else right on a delivery for our composer.
BUT when I load my master, locked sequence, it now has the same pans. I have always been able to have different pan settings on different sequences.

Am I overlooking something?
Any help would be appreciated so that I don’t have to keep adjusting pans on sequences for different turnovers.

I’m on Media Composer 8.8.2

Hi Tory,

THIS ONLY WORKS IF THE REPLACEMENT FILE NAMES ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE ORIGINALS i.e they are a re-export out of Resolve (or such) with the same names.

I made sure that all of the mxf’s for those dailies were in their own Avid MediaFiles folder. Do this BEFORE you quit out of Avid and use the Media Tool to move them to their own folder if they are mixed in with other footage that you don’t want to replace.

I quit out of AVID and then did the following:
I copied them to an NG folder that I created outside of the MXF file structure for safety, and deleted them from their original folder.
Then I copied all of the NEW, replacement MXFs to the ORIGINAL folder that had had the “bad” files in them.

I trashed the media database…..and when I relaunched Avid…..voila…..everything linked up to the original master clips inside of Avid. I think there may have been a couple of files that I had to relink manually.

So would just deleting those mxfs from the Avid MediaFiles folder and replacing with the new ones…..and then restarting Avid, not work?
They have the exact same names…..would that break the links?

Hi all,

I know this is an old post but it relates……

I have two days’ of dailies that were transferred with an artefact on all of the clips that are not on the master camera files.
They are redoing the export of the MXFs from Resolve for me.
I have to keep editing with that material while I wait for the new transfer.
If I want to replace all of the clips from those days – not just the sequence, what would be the best way to do that to ensure that I don’t lose any links?

I have done this before many years ago…..but can’t remember exactly what I did and don’t have time for mis-steps ☹
