April 9, 2014 at 5:07 pm in reply to: Resolve 11 What is your plan?

[Jeremy Garchow] “It seems like the big difference between free and paid is noise reduction (and stereo 3D).

Is DaVinci Noise reduction worth $999?”

There are a few more differences. Some of the most important (IMO) are lack of collaborative team workflows, 2 GPU limit (3 on other versions, up to 8 on Linux) and no “Real Time Timeline Power Mastering”.

[David Lawrence] “Or maybe they know there are many viable alternatives to their Office Suite (many free) and don’t want to lose customers?”

Yup, that and the fact that different customers have different needs… an individual user, or a 10 to 15 person accounting firm is going to have different needs than an enterprise with a 100,000+ person workforce. That’s why you have the option to rent 365, or ‘buy’ 2013. 🙂

April 8, 2014 at 5:00 pm in reply to: Resolve 11 – Is it me…

[Bret Williams] “My prediction. Next year – they add multi cam and a full 3D motion-like animation system, except it’ll be node based like smoke.”

Node based applications aren’t typically very good at animation… that’s why the most poplar animation programs are layer based. Maybe Resolve will become the all-in-one application that some want it to be, but not anytime soon. My prediction is that Resolve will become a solid finishing tool that might (more or less) take the wind out of Autodesk’s sails, but probably not Adobe’s… not unless Blackmagic buys Corel and Hitfilm and drastically re-tools those applications for more integrated workflows… BM would also need an answer to the AE/C4D integration story… all of that would take a lot of time.

[Jeremy Garchow] “A 10″ monitor seems like it would snap off in real world usage.

I don’t rely on ship dates from anyone anymore. 🙂

    Jeremy”

Yeah, my first thought about the 10″ monitor was that; a. it should have been a 7″ monitor, and b. it should be a separate accessory… too much like Red?

Pretty much agree about ship dates. 🙂

[Jeremy Garchow] “The website says $8995

i don’t know what that includes, exactly. My guess is just the camera body.

    Jeremy”

It looks like the price includes the camera, battery plate and top handle. That’s a beast of a deal considering all of the i/o ports and shooting formats built in. Looking at it, I’m now wondering why BMD didn’t include any 2k formats on their 4k cameras… that seems like a no brainer. I think BMD has got some real competition for the URSA now… excellent. I think they need some industry pressure to perform better. Now let’s see how that July ship date works out. 🙂

All very good points, Tim. It really is hard to believe usage numbers from any of the NLE vendors, since we’re all probably inclined to believe one stat or another based on personal experience or software/OS preference, while using multiple NLE/post tools ourselves. So I think you’re right, creative professionals probably swim in murkier waters than anyone admits.

Looking forward to more NAB stories. 🙂

[David Lawrence] “I was super excited about the Blackmagic cameras last year but now I’m not so sure.”

Yeah… BMD has been really good at announcing exiting new cameras… not so good at delivering things on time and communicating with existing customers. Frankly, I find it baffling that they keep stubbing their toe on the same issues…. with every camera. That said, I still really like my 2.5k cinema camera. 🙂

[Bret Williams] “But didn’t just about every single person here own Premiere since CS3 and never used it? It came with the Production Bundle, which included AE, PS, IL, Premiere, and even Dreamweaver. I’m guessing Adobe counted all those installs of Premiere.”

Well, considering that many if not most of the participants here are former or current FCP users, you might get a somewhat skewed response here. Probably lots more long term PPro users on other forums.

[Charlie Austin] “Also, waveforms don’t move with the clip until you release it if you’re dragging it, which kinda sucks…”

Yes, that would be helpful. It’s odd that Premiere doesn’t do this, considering that Audition does.

[Charlie Austin] “[Shawn Miller] “You can also edit and adjust clips down to the sample level in Premiere and Vegas… FYI. Speaking of… I think Vegas gets the prize for being the most DAW like. :-)”

I’ve heard that about Vegas, I’d like to try it but I have the wrong OS…”

I think Lance Batchelder used to run Vegas via Bootcamp… unless I’m misremembering that, hopefully he’ll correct me if I’m wrong. I just remember ‘back in the day’, he was one of the few Mac users on the Sonic Foundry Vegas forums.

[Charlie Austin] “And yes, I realize you can edit and adjust audio in sample increments in other NLE’s, but, AFAIK, you can’t move or trim them in the timeline in that small an increment. I can trim or move a clip in minuscule increments without leaving the timeline. I like that.”

No… you can move, edit and trim audio on the timeline (down to the sample level) in Premiere and Vegas. Unless I’m mistaken, Premiere has been able to do this since CS4… though, I could be misremembering that too. 🙂
