If TB2 is 20Gb/sec, is that fast enough for 4k storage? Is Thunderbolt 2 RAID fast enough for grading 4k R3D in real time assuming there are no bottlenecks elsewhere?

True. But to connect an external chassis to your mac pro you’d still be using Thunderbolt to get it to the capture card. I guess what I’m really trying to figure out is: are there any problems playing back 4k footage from a mac pro to capture card via Thunderbolt?
I’ve read that even Thunderbolt 2 is significantly slower than PCIe 3.
Anyone using the Ultrastudio 4k or Decklink Extreme 4k in a chassis for playing back 4k footage?

I’ll most likely be using DNxHD185 but would like the option to connect to Red files via AMA, although It’s probably wishful thinking on my part.
Thanks for the quick response, I really appreciate it.

Thanks so much Jan!
I’ve been trying to figure that one out for a little while as well.
Much Better. -
Dan,
For someone with your experience and track record you should definitely be making more than that,
especially with the added duties of music editing.I ran into a similar situation a couple years ago and told the client I needed a raise in order to continue. They denied me the raise so I left. I was replaced immediately but they called me back about a week later because they realized I was much faster. I knew their workflow, their storage and operational protocol, approval process, deliverables, and so on. With tight deadlines looming, it’s funny how the budget all of a sudden increases. In the long run it is cheaper to pay someone who is fast and efficient at a higher rate.
Good Luck.

Greg,
Hang in there man. These are tough times we’re currently in across the globe, it’s not just an L.A. thing. New York is really rough right now too – it’s what happens when Ad Sales/Marketing revenue dries up due to a global recession.
And then of course, as others have mentioned, the proliferation of FCP on macs has turned every rich kid into an “editor” thereby lowering the pay scale for seasoned, professional, editors. Long gone are the days of a hierarchy system where you begin as an Assistant for years until you prove your skill at cutting sequences and then you move up the ladder.
Unfortunately, and feel free to disagree I’m just shooting from the hip here, we seem to have reached a saturation point in our culture where every other person wants to be in the film business, wants to be an editor… but there aren’t enough jobs to support the tens of thousands of film students that graduate each year. If we could all be filmmakers and musicians there would be nobody left to collect the garbage, do our taxes, or clean the outside windows of high-rises – it’s natural selection. Persevere and you will climb out of the ditch. As I digress, corporate gigs tend to be more steady but less glamorous so definitely try to widen your net. Getting into Hollywood to cut Features is nearly impossible unless you’re born into it, know some key players, or have wealthy parents who don’t mind supporting you while you work for copy & credit on some Indie Films or Docs to strengthen your resume. For the rest of us, we keep at it, stay positive, get better at our craft for the love of it and hope that luck swings our way one day.

Walter,
I’ve done a clean install of Final Cut Studio 2 as you suggested.
However, now FCP crashes every 10 – 20 minutes usually
while I’m scrubbing or working within the timeline. The footage is 720P
captured from a P2 card in the .MXF format.FCP won’t force quit either, so I have to do a hard re-boot every time
it happens.I’ve trashed my preferences, repaired/verified disk permissions, created a new user but nothing’s worked so far.
Any suggestions?
