I guess you haven’t seen the 10 hour loops on YouTube of things like Nyan cat or other inane songs. Or the fireplace that goes for 16 hours. They have LONG videos on the Tubes

Yeah, that ONE RAID is 16TB. And I still have lots of other FW drives, including the very FIRST FW400 drives I bought to use with FCP 2.

Knowing codecs helps too. Making ProRes files vs Uncompressed would be better…both are 10 bit, but ProRes has a lower data rate.
but you did say PROXY files…not OPTIMIZED, right? What codec did you convert the files to?

Yes, but mainly as archival now. Show masters, camera offloads. Although I have camera cards also backed up on separate external drives, and show masters archive on separate drives with full project consolidations, it’s nice to have these here and easily accessable.

I have an old 2008 MacPro running 10.6.8 around for just this purpose. That, and it connects to a 16TB Raid that won’t connect to a new machine…old connection. So I keep this around. Best thing to do if you need to open older projects or deal with older media, keep an older machine

It’s Free! yaaay! It’s a great cross-platform codec! Yaaay!
Buuuuuut the networks won’t adopt it…they’ll keep asking for ProRes for another decade. And Avid will still work with DNxHR…Apple with ProRes. Adobe will keep insisting it works fine natively…although I’m sure you can use Cineform with this, but will Adobe do what Andrew suggests? Optimize for this codec like Avid and Apple do?
