And the price similarity wouldn’t be worth the hassle of installing and maintaining that OS. BUT… a similarly spec’d HP z6 (to the one in the article) costs just a tad more than the baseline price listed, and you KNOW the one they tested doesn’t run $5000. That, and the ability to swap out processors (to updated ones), swap out GPU, add cards for more ports, add many internal hard drives…makes switching to windows pretty enticing.
Unless you use FCX. Then you are beholden.

But really, for $5000 base model, it makes the argument for going for a PC (HP z8) more attractive that ever…and makes the price of them seem reasonable.

Pricing helps realize that the HP z8 series isn’t over-priced. And I’ll opt for the better expandability over the 5K monitor.
But yes, for FCX, it seems to be a good machine.

Upscaling SD to HD…here is the list of best quality way of doing it to least quality way…
1) Hardware upscale…TERRANEX from BlackMagic design.
2) After Effects upscale.
3) Premiere Pro upscale in the timeline.
4) Transfer it to a VHS tape, have your dog chew on it, and then capture that as HDV, convert to H.264 five times.Don’t do #4.
So the options you have already are After Effects and Premiere. They upscale decently, but your footage will still look like SD (softer) next to the HD footage, nothing you can do about that. But making it look better is the goal….

What is the codec of this footage? H.264? AVCHD? Or something like ProRes or DNxHD?

NO need to relink in Avid. If you both have the same media, as Avid media in the Avid file structure, then all you need to do is send bins of cuts back and forth, and the sequences will immediately relink to the media.
