You really should get more RAM…16GB is bare minimum. 32 is better.
And I don’t know if Resolve will run on Windows HOME edition. It’s high end professional software and from my research on the matter, Blackmagic Design said that it requires Windows Professional.

First off, if the mac laptop you bought was brand new, you can’t install an OS previous to the one it ships with. Previous OS versions will not have the drivers for the current hardware in the computers, so they won’t allow the install. If you need to run FCP 7, then you need to buy an older computer that will allow an older OS to run on it. This is one reason I’m still holding onto my 2008 MacPro.
Second, the last OS that had an installer disk was Snow Leopard. Every OS version after that was released digitally only, so you had to have downloaded it…because Apple gets rid of previous OS installers a couple months after they release the latest, and never have anything older than the one previous OS version.
So your solution is to buy an older, used mac to run this…or switch to something like Adobe…which is VERY similar to how FCP 7 worked. Or to get Resolve, which is free…although it is new to the editing world and things are pretty different in it. Adobe is your best, closest bet.

Sorry, no, there is not. You can try various other scaling methods…Instant HD by Red Giant Software…scaling in After Effects…scaling in Motion…using MPEG STREAMCLIP….using COMPRESSOR…

OK…CURRENTLY the iMac Pro is really only beneficial if you use FCX…or render out of After Effects like Oliver noted.
Hopefully Resolve and Premiere pro will catch up by the time the new MacPro comes out. But really, I’m not holding my breath for that one. Apple’s priorities no longer seem to be with some of the high end video professional…only with their niche (a sizeable one, I’ll admit)

Long story short…The iMac Pro is only worth it if you use FCX. So the very expensive Mac really is only good for FCX.
With Resolve, exports can take LONGER than with a 5K iMac. Adobe Premiere Pro…doesn’t take advantage of what it has to offer. Avid wasn’t mentioned, but it was on other tests, so I know that the advantages to the iMac Pro for it are very minimal.
SO…the iMac Pro really is only good for FCX. For everyone who uses other NLEs and grading software…save your money and get an iMac 5K or a PC that offers much more expandability, but a crappier OS (IMHO)

If this is a newer computer, you can’t roll back the OS. The OS it ships with is typically the one that it has to remain at. If the machine was introduced when a previous OS was out, then you can go back to that one…but that’s it.
So if the version of Sorenson that came with Avid doesn’t work with this OS version, you’ll need to update.

Transcodes to what? Producer dailies? Final delivery? Looking at the options, DESKTOP fits most editor needs, but again, you need to look at what you need to transcode, and see which of the versions best suits that.

You said CAPABLE of 4K. Did you shoot 4K? If so, why are you in an HD project setting? If you want this 4K (UHD) footage to remain UHD…then you should be in a UHD project setting. This way you get access to the higher than HD codecs, like DNxHR, DNxHQ….etc.
Now…what to transcode to. Do you want to work Full resolution? Offline resolution to save space and relink to later? What is your deliverable? Where will this end up?

Yup, this never works for me. Never. This is why I have the clients either export each still as a separate file, with handles….or provide a single, textless, flattened full res export of their sequence so I can use that to chop out the stills.

OK….BMD Deckink and NVidia cards are completely different things. They don’t serve the same purpose. If you get a Decklink card, you still need the video card….the Nvidia or GeForce…to get a signal to your computer displays. And some applications like Premiere and Resolve also leverage the graphics card to help with real time playback and lessen render times. The BMD card is to get a video signal out to a broadcast monitor or HDTV for client viewing full screen, or for color correction.

It’s best NOT to use computer monitors via blackmagic. I mean, there are a couple that people have liked, like the Dreamcolor. And a few others (I can’t recall brands because I don’t use them, and don’t plan on using them). But you can get a decent image feeding some specific models via the Decklink card.
Which BMD card? Well, if you have Thunderbolt 3, you can get the one I suggested. If you have a tower with PCIe…then you can get the INtensity internal cards.
Really…what I honestly suggest you do is contact an expert…a reseller who specializes in video editing equipment. Because you need personal guidance on this in making sure you get the right thing and that it’s set up properly. I’m sure you are good at what you do, but you seem pretty inexperienced in this particular technical aspect, so you should seek assistance beyond a forum post. Someone to help in person.
