Well, NTSC, technically speaking, is 740×486, 29.97fps. Always. Avid just happens to make a 23.98 NTSC format to allow us to work in a very low proxy workflow for HD footage. Meaning that if DHx36 is still too big, we can utilize the NTSC codecs like 10:1 and 14:1, and maintain our HD frame rate. It’s a cheat to allow projects to do that.

SO…I’m wondering if it is because of that. Just guessing, spitballing. Is your master footage HD and you are trying for this proxy workflow, or is your SD footage, somehow, really 23.98? I know several DV formats recorded 23.98, but in a 29.97 stream and you removed pulldown upon ingest.

  • [greg janza] “If FCPX was cross-platform I’d venture to guess that it could be a possibility in the future but since FCPX is locked there’s very little chance this will ever happen.”

I don’t think so. The vast majority of Avid systems in Hollywood are Mac. Yes, there are PC stations, but a good 80-90% of the Avid setups are on Apple machines. FCP Legacy was Mac only, and it really threatened Avid’s foothold in Hollywood. Took the town by storm, and caused Avid to wake up and start paying attention to the needs of the editors. FCP 7 was positioning to really make a huge dent…and if they continued with FCP 8 and along the same path, they might have. BUT, they didn’t. They dropped it in favor of a larger market.

The platform it was on isn’t the issue, it’s the interface.

March 6, 2019 at 7:43 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro v. 6.0.6 and MAc OS High Sierra

Sorry, the last OS to officially support FCP 6 was 10.5. The last to support FCP 7 was 10.6.8. Many components of FCS 3 (FCP 7) broke with 10.9.5. And Apple officially announced that FCP 7 would not work in Mojave, period. So I’m pretty sure that FCP 6 working in the previous OS, High Sierra, would be a pipe dream.

Sorry, but FCP 6 is over 10 years old…and with any software that old, the later the OS version, the more chance of that old software not working. If you rely on FCP 6 and need it to work, then you need to run it on a machine with an OS that supports it. Or at least a partition of a hard drive with an older OS, that you can boot too when needed.

The only way to get FCP 6 to work on that laptop now is to partition the hard drive and run an older OS on it. This might mean wiping the drive and doing everything from scratch…making the two partitions, installing the different OS versions on each partition, and then installing your apps. You MIGHT be able to partition the HD now to do that, but if it’s very full, it won’t really work. And honestly, you risk causing issues.

So…alas, if you want to run the older FCP 6, you need to run an older OS. If you need the newer OS for some things, then you need to have two partitions on this computer…or two separate computers. BUT, regardless, if you need FCP 6 to work, you need to start from scratch on it…install an older OS and reinstall the software. There’s no way to install an older OS on the current computer…regress back.

    Sorry.

SO, shot 1920×1080, wide screen. But edited 1440×1080 square, with those settings, and when you export 1440×1080, it’s zoomed in? What are you export settings exactly?

If you want free, RESOLVE is an option. A tad more complex than just doing it in Avid.

And as we ALL know, the NLE is the whole reason the films were great. Boy does Avid like to claim that.

February 25, 2019 at 6:40 pm in reply to: Convert 50p footage to 30p

Depends on how you convert. 50p to 30p will remove frames in an irregular manner, and might cause a “skippy” look. 60p to 30p and 50p to 25p are nice even conversions…every other frame removed, so it looks fine. You MIGHT need to run these clips thru and Alchemist for better blending. Depends on how bad you think things look

February 25, 2019 at 6:02 pm in reply to: 50 fps PAL footage to FCP7 timeline always needs render?

OK, first off, FCP 7 only works with specific codecs, those found in the Easy Setup list. So even if you make a sequence that matches your source codec, FCP will not work with it without rendering (thus making that clip into an FCP codec…the render at least), although any changes and it comes unrendered.

Transcoding to ProRes SHOULD work. ProRes 422, 1280×720, 50p should work. FCP should make sequence settings for that that work. 720p at 50fps is progressive. But a Flipcam…wondering if that shoots interlaced. That’s an older camera, so I’m not sure what it shoots exactly, but it SHOULD be progressive.
