I’ve done it that way too many times to count. My first computer I used for editing was a white iBook with one FW400 port. I looped my camera through the drive.
What OS are you running? Any adapters in this chain?

That should work fine. Is the camera a DV camera? If so, use the DV/NTSC Easy Setup and you should be good to go. Is it HDV? Then use the HDV easy setup.

You are using the wrong project setting. The camera shoots 1080p 60fps. When you see “p” that means the next number is FRAMES per second. 1080i60 is 30fps (29.97). The “i” means interlaced and that means FIELDS per second. So your video is not only losing half the frames per second, it’s now interlaced. And that’s not good.

Link and then transcode to DNxHD. Not sure what the number after it will be…I know 145 for 23.98fps and 175 for 29.97fps are the same…the only reason the other number is 175 is because there are more frames per second…so the data rate is higher. OK, made a project and looked at the numbers, DNxHD 200 or 290 should suffice.

Export same as source (601/709), and then compress that file to meet whatever needs you have, YouTUbe, DVD…whathaveyou.

You won’t get ORIGINAL quality… any conversion will result in SOME quality loss. And native editing of H.264 isn’t recommended. Converting to DNxHD will be visually lossless…you won’t see any difference in quality if you stick with 200 or 290. And then you’ll export a master file at DNxHD 290 (if you go with 290)…and encode that to h.264 for the web. But know that the smaller the file size, the more compression is done. So you need to use a good quality encoder for H.264, Avid isn’t it. Media Encoder, Sorenson, Compressor…those will do good.

The next update of Premiere will address this. BOY was I happy to see that. Next version you can open multiple projects at the same time..and even LOCK them like Avid bins in a shared environment. And when you copy over a sequence, you won’t get media populating the project, just the sequence.

The Panasonic P2 cameras could record 720p 23.98…23.98 actual frames per second. But the media would be ID’d as “DVCPRO HD 720p60.” Because that’s the format…the standard for 720p is 720p60…but the FRAME RATE would be something else.
Like 1080…. a lot of metadata will refer to it as 1080i60, even though it plays at 23.98…because in that case, pull down might havr been removed. But the standard at the time for 1080 was 1080i60…like the standard for 720p is 720p60. THat was just the format…then after that, you’d get the frame rate.
Just odd metadata shenanigans.

Googling this and I find things on exporting as AS-11 files…and that it’s one of the new standards for some British TV networks. Sorry, I have no experience with this. You might try posting this in the Avid forum, or asking the tech experts at the network what they recommend for encoding the way they need.
