Sorry I gave some wrong advice. I am so used to doing this that it becomes second nature and I just go through the motions. Dave and John are right and you have to interpret the footage. Sorry for that and answering quickly instead of thoroughly reading my post before sending. My apologies.

That’s the way I have done it. Create something with no field dominance then make it 59.94 and have fun. I have done a lot of retiming work that way.

As a former improv comedian with Second City I can tell you that it is REALLY difficult to be funny when somone says “hey, you do improv? Well, be funny.” We can provide you with 30,000ft. ideas but we aren’t working on YOUR film. You are the director and you have the vision in your mind’s eye. Therefore, you have to be able to convey what is in your mind to film. If you don’t know how or what to do perhaps you are being a little too ambitious. Maybe you should start smaill and leave the VFX out until you have a firm grasp of what you CAN do with the budget with which you have to work. There is nothing wrong with that!
There are many TV spots, movies and music videos that don’t use VFX. They base their spots on a little thing called… a story. Tell your story first and if it is really necessary (not just cool) to have the VFX then figure out what you want, go to a local college or something and find a good photoshop, AE or 3D artist to help. I can PROMISE you that you will find someone who can help to make your vision a reality and they would love to trade their skills, creativity and knowledge for the chance to work on a project. It just may not happen in a timely manner but it will happen.

As someone who directs and post produces television commercials I can tell you that you can do A LOT with green/blue screens and a talented photoshop/AE/3D artists. Depending on how you want the horses and other stuff flying through the scene you may have to rotoscope that stuff. But almost all movies have many keyed elements in them. While you have no money for certain things now, you may want to find some money to get a good artist to help you composite your final scenes in post.

Also look into Digital Anarchy’s Resizer. It is spefically designed for this purpose. I have downloaded and tried the demo version but am shooting in broadcast SD so I don’t have a need for it now. However, if I did then I would buy it. It really worked well on some test footage I had. http://WWW.DIGITALANARCHY.COM

Guys,
We started using Flash last year when we were having more problems with .SWF files (the audio was an issue and the quality wasn’t as good – at least we thought). Plus I like the ease of use with Sorenson’s ON2VP6 (or something like that) as the codec for the Flash video. We have never had any problems. They load fast and the quality is great. Check out http://WWW.DOINGINDY.COM and you can see all of our fils.
Also, to the person using Cleaner… I used to use Cleaner but it was too slow and I had more flexibility with Squeeze. If you look at our site and the show you will see that a lot of our show are around 8 mins. in length. So, depending on your system it can take anywhere from 10 min – 30 mins. Our show is usually between 5-9 mins in length and anywhere from 1 – 2.5 gigs. I have an Intel Mac Duo 3.0 and Sorenson finishes the job in that time frame every week. We also have a little iMac for some simple editing jobs. And, sometimes we use Sorenson there too. It never takes any longer than 30 minutes to export and squeeze. Let me know if you need anything else.

July 20, 2007 at 12:00 am in reply to: 3rd party Roto plugin for After Effects? I have 20 seconds to roto, ouch!Jimmy,
I have never used Silhouette before. I did all my roto work in Combustion since it has the B-Splines and is just easier than AE. I can tell you that since buying Motor last month, I have been amazed at how quick, easy and fluid it is. We are getting ready to shoot a music video with a new artist named Jon McLaughlin and I am already started to think of some cool roto work I can do with this tool (like having him walk down the street and constantly change backgrounds – I don’t have access to a large green-screen that day). So, motor is worth the money. They are still selling it at Plug-inz.com for 50% off.
Peace,

Bob,
Not only do I direct and produce broadcast TV spots but I also host and produce a weekly video podcast about all the cool things to do in Indy. We have thought about going with a streaming server to use QT because the quality is so great. However, we deal with the exact same issues as you.
Our solution was to making it a “no-brainer” for everyone to watch our podcast. We have been using Sorenson Squeeze for the last year and a half. We output a large QT file usually anywhere from 1-2.5gb file and bring it into Squeeze. We have changed some of the standard settings and output as a .FLV. If you want to see the quality of the .FLV go to http://www.doingindy.com and check out our weekly videos. You will see that Squeeze does an incredible job and is worth the investment.
I hope that helps.

I just bought Mocha this morning for $199.00 since I had recently purchased Motor. I was browsing the Shake forum and saw a post from Imagineer about their special through the end of July. You can get Mocha for $299.00 if you didn’t buy Motor and Mocha is the (as they describe it) “Big Brother” to Motor. Mocha has the ability to track and rotoscope but it is known for it’s planar tracking capabilities.
I have been wanting to get into Imagineer’s stuff for A LONG TIME now but with a 5 person production house I could never justify the expense. Now I can! They are also selling Monet for $1600.00 with is 90% off the regular price. The post was on the Shake forum along with the coupon codes. I hope that helps.
