That’s awesome. Thank you for the details.

Your steps seem to do the trick, though I find I have to add a “fill” to the path/shape layer and then pre-comp it as you describe. Also I had to ensure that there was no other layer within the precomp other than the shape, since Trapcode then uses all the information within the full frame, rather than just the masked area, to generate particles.

Do you happen to know how to make globules that have a bit of life in Trapcode? You know, so they’re sort of liquidy? I can make globes and stuff, but I’m not sure how to make globules that have some morping/sticky properties.

    EDIT:

Problem is the particles seem to emanate from the entire frame (full 16×9 layer) rather than just the shape I’ve drawn around the vase.

Ah. Never thought of that. Gawd only knows why you have to pre-compose some things and not others. Sometimes, when in doubt, just pre-compose the darned thing. Thank you, though. It’s now working!

    Thanks for the thoughts.

I wish you could do one layer in 32 bit and another layer in 16 bit (as long as there wasn’t a cross-fade between them). But alas, I usually need a 16-bit-only effect somewhere along the chain.

I was thinking more about this, and it struck me that the preference for Longer RAM Preview versus Faster Rendering is something you are going to then tweak a lot. Maybe even on the fly. Because you’re tweaking it it adjust to specific compositions. Or when dealing with parts of compositions containing different effects. Or when you’re rendering out a comp entirely, versus working on the comp. So it seems that this slider could be a window like “Audio” or “Tracker” that you can keep open and tweak as you like. Because putting it in Preferences like that suggests it’s sort of a global preference that you leave alone once you’ve set it. Just a thought.

Thank you for clearing this up for me! I now have a much better understanding of what that slider does and why.

Thank you. When you reveal that the foreground processes are NOT involved in rendering, that begins to help my understanding greatly. Rendering = background RAM.

So which direction on the slider allocates the most RAM to background processes?

Cool, very good advice. I tried the two ramps and one just completely obscures the other–and then you mention blending modes. Of course! That should work. And I have never used shapes before. I’ll try that too. The ancient days when you had to shoot something to become your matte must have been more fun actually. The extra work required to create the art must have provided some satisfaction. I do love the power of After Effects, nevertheless. But it’s a GIANT program, and sometimes easy tasks such as creating complex gradients/ramps baffle me. I think you guys have solved my questions though. Thank you.

Thanks. Creating and saving a preset with most used effects (Levels, Curves, Exposure, Hue/Sat) is the way to go then. You’d think there’d be an easier way…but at least I can add them all in one go, and then just disable them one-by-one. Thanks for the thoughts.

Sounds like a codec or video card issue. What codec are you rendering from and to? And have you ever rendered anything else this way?
