August 18, 2008 at 11:36 pm in reply to: RED workflow – ProRes422 HQ?

    [Joel Fisher] “We’ll be shooting 4K 24fps (which is preferable for in-house DVD-only release, 23.98, or 24p? I’d personally think 24p)”

Unless you are doing a film out, you will be wanting to work in 23.98. That is the NTSC film-on-video rate. “24p DVDs” are 23.98 (23.976 to be exact). You can always conform back and forth between 23.98 and 24.00 using Cinema Tools or FCP itself – so it really doesn’t matter. But to avoid confusion you should keep your entire workflow at 23.98 since there’s absolutely zero reason to use 24.00 unless its going to film.

I’ve yet to work with the RED so I can’t comment on the rest of your post. But from what I can tell it looks like a good way to go.

August 16, 2008 at 6:33 am in reply to: Exporting for Satellite TV

[Yvette Hej] “Where did I go wrong? Is there a codec specific for Satellite broadcast? I looked it up and read somewhere that MPEG 2 is used for Satellite, but MPEG 2 isn’t an option. “

It’s an option in Compressor. It’s hidden in there. MPEG-2 Program Stream. But that doesn’t mean it will solve your problem as they’ll probably just re-encode it anyways (even if it’s the same format they use). David’s advice to send DV50 is not a bad idea, except DV50 won’t work on PCs so they might not even be able to use it. You really need to ask the the place what their regular delivery format is.

August 15, 2008 at 6:31 pm in reply to: Playing out 23.98 to tape

[Maverick Litchfield-Kelly] “I rendered that and noticed that some of the 25fps shots juddered. We exported those out, put them through compressor changing their fps to 23.98”

The much, much better way to do this is to use Cinema Tools and conform the PAL to 23.98. Conform, not convert, is better because you won’t have redundant frames.

[Maverick Litchfield-Kelly] “I create a new sequence at Apple Pro Res 1080p 23.98, use Video Out Blackmagic HDTV 29.976, connect Deck to computer using HD-SDi Blackmagic HD Extreme 2 and…nothing.”

Sounds like you’re doing everything right on the FCP end. But the deck needs to be set to 23.98 frequency. Changing the frequency of an HDCam deck is very tricky. It’s not even in the user’s manual. Sorry, I wish I remembered all the steps but I don’t.

Use Quicktime Export, custom size, preserve aspect, crop. This will give you a 223 high movie. Use QT Export again, use the same options but choose 720×486. You’ll end up with a 486 movie but the frame size within will only be 223. This process has multiple rounds of encoding so you should use Uncompressed for your codec.

Just stick with self-contained exports. Make your sequence settings whatever format you wish to export.

August 12, 2008 at 6:24 am in reply to: Capturing 24pA footage into FCP

I don’t think there’s such thing as 24pA for HDV. 24pA is DV only, as far as I know. 24p is different than 24pA. If you shot 24p HDV, then capture 24p and edit 24p. Why are you working in 29.97?

August 10, 2008 at 1:33 am in reply to: Reconnecting media: video only, no audio

You’re not doing anything wrong. Sounds like a corrupted project or corrupted preferences.

Trash your prefs. Then export your sequence as an XML file. Move all your media to a different folder. And then import the XML to a new project and manually reconnect. See if it works then.

If none of that works, you can always manually replace each clip in your sequence by using Match Frame and Replace. Doing this is actually faster than it sounds if you use keyboard shortcuts.

August 8, 2008 at 3:54 am in reply to: do I need a RAID setup to capture HD with Kona LH

[Ben Scott] “i got it capturing on a non intel mac this week prores hq 1080p 25, G5 fast raid and Kona LH

if there had been problems would have dropped frames, it didnt

captured over 4 hours of footage

I know it is said it cannot but i definitely got it working this week “

That’s interesting. It should be noted that the conventional wisdom that this doesn’t work on a G5 was when it was FCP 6.0 and OSX 10.4. There’s been ProApps updates and other things that may have reduced the amount of horsepower ProRes requires.

That said, have you tried Edit To Tape? I highly doubt you’ll be able to pull that off w/o dropped frames.

  • If you’re going to get an iMac you should get the 24″ with the Nvidia 8800. Otherwise it’s pointless in my opinion. Either get a good graphics card that will last a while, or don’t even bother and just get a Mac Mini. Definitely don’t get the 20″. That’s too much money to be permanently stuck with a small screen and a $99 graphics card.

Honestly all the iMacs are pretty overpriced IMO. Half the price is the monitor, and non-Apple monitors are cheap. The Mac Pros, on the other hand, are priced very competitively compared to PCs with similar specs.
