do I need a RAID setup to capture HD with Kona LH

You cannot capture ProRes via a capture card using non-Intel G5s, because of the processing power required. It’s not about the speed/throughput from a raid in this case. ProRes can be captured on the fly via firewire on non-Intel G5s however. Go figure… There’s a great tutorial by Chris Poisson on that subject which you can locate by doing a search using his name.

With HD, like what he asked, that is correct. But SD ProRes can be captured just fine using a G5.

sorry…I know I’m missing something…why would I buy a Kona LH (that only supports pci-x) that has HD compatibility if I cannot capture HD? (or is it just the prores codec that I cannot capture with?)

also if I can capture HD then what setup would I need? a RAID?

You can certainly capture HD with the Kona, just not ProRes. Your options are however limited to DVCPro, HDV, uncompressed 8 and 10-bit. The later two require beefy raids with 6 to 8 hard drives, wheareas the compressed HD codecs will do quite nicely with firewire 800 or preferably a SATA raid. For example, I have a Kona LH and use a four bay SATA enclosure from Firmtek, which has always served me quite nicely, but there are many other good brands on the market.

what drives are in your enclosure?

I have (4) 750Gb Hitachi drives. I have about 30 and the only one I’ve ever had that was NG came from the factory that way. So, I’m sticking with Hitachi for now. They are recommended by Firmtek and they are also used in many other manufacturers raids, such as CalDigit. Others like Seagate or WD… All SATA drives are pretty darned good.

i got it capturing on a non intel mac this week prores hq 1080p 25, G5 fast raid and Kona LH

if there had been problems would have dropped frames, it didnt

captured over 4 hours of footage

I know it is said it cannot but i definitely got it working this week

It’s just ProRes you can’t capture in HD. ProRes HD requires a fast CPU to encode it.

You can capture DVCProHD on your G5. You don’t need a RAID for DVCProHD.

You can also capture Uncompressed 8-bit or 10-bit on your G5, but for that you do need a RAID.
