There is no Blackmagic DV codec, I assume you mean the Apple DV codec.
If you have a fast Mac (dual G5), you’ll get an orange render bar. Playback will be RT and full quality. However, you will have to render it at some point before mastering to tape.

Digibeta using SDI is the same quality no matter what VTR you have.

That site is fantastic. He did a 10 generation test for most codecs. DV50 was very lossy while PhotoJPEG was almost identical.

Yes, exactly what Gramme said. PhotoJPEG is quite a bit better. 75% quality is what you want – it’s virtually lossless, much like the Digibeta codec.

Your Compressor app is hosed. It’s happened to me twice. These type of problems are addressed on Apple’s site. You need to re-install it.

The advange obviously is that you can restore the original media and reconnect it. For reasons you mentioned, it’s better than creating new self-contained media and losing your edit handles.

Use Stuffit or something similar and create 4.7GB files. I had to do something similar when I backed up my old Media 100 footage to DVDR’s. About 1 out of 20 files would be larger than 4.7GB. I used WinRAR on a PC, but Stuffit Pro can probably do the same thing.

You are exporting an NTSC Quicktime. PAL is 25fps and has a different resolution. Toast is not going to do a PAL conversion for you.
Use Final Cut and convert the sequence to PAL, using a plug-in like Natress. Then export a PAL Quicktime Movie.
