No, I mean is there any 3:2 telecine. This has to do with the framerate. If you don’t know what that means, can you tell if it was originally shot on film or videotape?

IMHO, you should just re-capture the DVCam footage and use hardware pulldown removal from a Kona or BM card. You just tell it where the A frame is in OS X System Prefs. Normally on 0, but you can do trial and error to be sure.

Do NOT get that Gefen thing. It’s just a dumb converter. Your monitor output is NOT a real video signal and Cinema Desktop mode does not have the proper timing and colorspace as a real video signal would.
The Matrox product is different. It’s not just a dumb converter. It was specifically designed to achieve what you are looking for. It uses software and hardware so that the output signal will be a proper video signal. I haven’t used it myself, but I can assure you it was meant for this. The Gefen thing is not.
But of course get a real card instead if you have a desktop. Aside from economics, you get better features and you won’t lose a computer monitor in the process. The Matrox thing only makes sense for laptops.

You might try to convert it to something else using VLC player or MPEG Streamclip.

I would consider capturing in Photo-JPEG. Blackmagic cards come with Easy Setups for this, including 1080psf 24. You maintain the full 1920×1080 (DVCPro cuts it down to 1280×1080), and the compression quality is better. Practically lossless. And the datarate is about the same as DVCPro HD so it should work on your FW800 drive.
The downside is you won’t have RT effects (there is a hack but I won’t get into that here). So this is a good onlining solution but not for offline editing that requires effects and/or multiple video layers. But if you want maximum RT performence you should be doing your offline editing in SD anyways.
The only reason to do your online edit in DVCPro HD is if your source tapes are that format (which they are not), or if you intend to master to that format (which normally you wouldn’t). For an HDCam/D5 -> HDCam/D5 project, DVCproHD doesn’t really fit in that equation unless you need to be able to show your offline work to the client in HD.

I don’t why they told you that the 2-port cards can’t do Link Aggregation. I’ve done it before. The guys at Small Tree are the ones who helped me out with it actually. Look here:

RAID5 from a Highpoint actually works pretty well. Remember that RAID5 only slows down from write speeds, not so much from read speeds.
That said, I think you’re much better off going with an 8-disk SATA solution. 8 250GB drives won’t cost much more than 4 400GB drives. Highpoint makes 8-port cards. Just route the SATA cables to an external SATA enclosure(s).
I use MetaSAN too BTW, but with an iSCSI box, not MetaLAN.

I’m one of the few people who actually likes Media Manager. Obviously it sucked when it couldn’t delete unused media from offline clips. And it sucked when multiclip and FCP5 first came out. But now that the bugs are gone, I think it’s great.
With Media 100 it was easy, but you had no options. One shot deal. You couldn’t even go back and reconnect to your original media if you wanted to. And your offline footage just sat there on the HDD so you had to go in and manually find and delete them. Plus Media 100 only worked with the Media 100 codec. FCP uses tons of different codecs giving you more power, but at the cost of a more complicated media management system.
