  • new .mt2s format?

Posted by Richard Ragon on December 10, 2006 at 3:58 am

I bought a new Sony AVCHD camera.. Looking into a work flow right now. Sony’s software can transfer over and write the .mt2s files.. but nothing seams to let me edit, or convert them. This includes both PC and Mac.

Any suguestions on how I can get HD footge files (.mt2s) into FCP?

    Thanks

A quick Google tells me that the file is based on multiplexed H.264 with AC3 audio.

People are trying Elecard & Nero software just to see it. Have Sony given you any indication as to how to convert or edit their format? I suggest you search through lots of online forums as there seems to be a few people having trouble with this format. FCP doesn’t deal with it at all. Have you tried opening it in Quicktime?

With that camera the only option you have is that editing software. No support in any other NLE yet.

    Sorry.

You might try to convert it to something else using VLC player or MPEG Streamclip.

The Sony software provides a media player to “play” the files.. Also, a converter to MP2, which degrades to a DV standard, and also create a AVCHD DVD, which looks like it plays on BlueRay/Playstation players. Nothing past that.

I want to convert or transcode to DVC50 or DVCpro or QT H.264 for storage or editing.

    Did that.

    Fails to open.

    Thanks

VLC fails too.. No listing of support for AVCHD format on MPEG Streamclip yet either..

    Thanks

Sounds like you’ll either have to wait for the NLE’s to offer support for this format, or some third party conversion software to come along and offer Quicktime conversion.

I know you will lose some quality, but I think just using the analog out of the camera would be the simplest solution (either to dub to another format, or direct capture into FCP if you have a capture card)

Loose some quality? If I go anolog out, I loose massive quailty by going SD and Not HD. The footage on the camera is absolutly stunning! I would hate to loose it. 🙂

Worse case here.. I’m going to keep archiving my footage in the .mt2s format on regualar DVD’s, and I hope at some point utilties will exist on the market to work with this format, transcode it into something FCP can read, or perhaps Apple will make sure they stay true to their commitment to Sony. I’m assuming that the .mt2s file format is Blue-Ray right?

Another possiblity is to go buy me a BlackMagic HDMI card, and capture it via the HDMI output on the camera. Haven’t tryied that one yet.

    Thanks Everyone

What about looking into Sony Vegas as a transcoder. They’ve just posted vers7c

AVCHD is not supported in Sony Vegas as of this writing. Support is planned in Spring 2007.

I don’t know what if anything will all you to edit these files at the point.
