  • I take things too seriously. I know.

Kona 3 is in slot 3, configured for 4-lane.

  • [walter biscardi] “Why would you do this? It’s an editing workstation, why would you use it for ANYTHING else when laying back to tape?”

We’ll agree to disagree. I’ve been doing this a very long time. And I haven’t had to worry about that kind of thing since Media 100 v6.

Launching Mail or Safari are nothing compared to things like SAN activity, Software RAID, etc. Not to mention all the other stuff Tiger does in the background. You want a lot of CPU overhead on your workstation, regardless of how diligent you are about not multitasking.

That’s why I’m perturbed about ProRes decoding taking four Xeon Woodcrest cores to more than half capacity. I don’t think H264 would even do that. ProRes is clearly not optimized whatsoever.

  • [gary adcock] “how much ram? needs to be more than 2 gigs”

    4 gigs.

[gary adcock] “what drives, if you are doing this from an internal alone– shame on you….”

Who do you think I am? Please.

If you use ProRes and not Uncompressed, you can stick with what you already have.

June 22, 2007 at 5:47 pm in reply to: FW800 fast enough for ProRes 422(HQ)?

This is a confusing discussion. Capturing from a hard drive? It’s HDV, and it’s ProRes?

FW800 is 800mbps theoretical max bandwidth. ProRes is 200mbps, so it will fit. Uncompressed 1080i HD 8-bit is about 1000mbps, so it will not.

No tape decks use FW800. So you can’t capture from it. The AJA IO/HD interfaces with the computer using FW800. It does the encoding to ProRes itself, thus allowing video to fit over FW800. It can’t do uncompressed HD nor can any device because, as I just said, that is impossible over FW800.

  • The whole FCS2 package is well worth it. Color, previously a 5k-25k program, makes it worth it alone.

But you’re right. FCP is hardly changed.

They added a codec. A great one. But technically that’s just a Quicktime codec, and they “unlocked” FCP so that ProRes is one of the handful of codecs which are allowed to use RT Extreme.

I’m sure the mixed format feature took them 5 minutes for them to add. All they did was unlock the RT Extreme restrictions on mixed formats. The automatic scaling and such – all that already existed in FCP 5. FCP 6 just unlocked the artificial limitations which allow fast enough machines to display a green render bar instead of an orange one. The work that went into “mixed formats” was so minimal, they didn’t even get the 480/486 conversions right, and they didn’t provide 3:2 pulldown when placing 23.98 clips on a 29.97 timeline (which basically means I can’t use the feature for mixing video and film footage – something I do quite often).

Like you said, no snazzy interface change. Black on dark grey. Its still seems like ancient code (it still takes forever to load – like it was Photoshop 6.0 or something). Features EVERYONE wants like the subject of this topic went un-addressed.

Again, FCS2 is fantastic and well worth the upgrade price. But FCP6 leaves much to be desired. They should have called it FCP 5.5. Remember the jump from 4.0 to 4.5 (HD)? That was way more significant that this one.

  • [John Heagy] “According to Apple’s white paper, ProRes is 8bit ProRes(HQ) is 10b”

Their HQ Easy Setups are 8-bit. They’ve already posted that it was a mistake.

I spent about $5k for an iSCSI SAN. It’s about 4TB, and there is dual-gigabit ethernet going to 4 seperate machines. MetaSAN software for 4 seats was another $4k. “Small-tree.com” sells dual channel ehternet cards.

  • [Santiago Gutierrez] “I notified them about it a few weeks ago. If you email support about it, they’ll email you the proper preset file needed.”

Thanks. Yes I was able to fix it quickly.

I’m not the one they should worry about. It’s people who don’t know about it that will be capturing non-HQ thinking it is HQ.

  • [gary adcock] “DVCPROHD is compressed at 100 mbps, HDcam is compressed at 145 mbps, both at 8bit
so 200 mbps for 10bit is about right. “

Neither of those are full-frame, and they’re certainly not the model for flawless video compression. Far from it.

ProRes is better. No doubt. But don’t fool yourselves into thinking its perfect. I’m sure Final Cut 8 will come with an even better format.

For the second time, I AM NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT PRORES. I’m happy to have it.
