  • FW800 fast enough for ProRes 422(HQ)?

I did a short test capturing and playing back a HDV clip to a FW800 hard drive using ProRes 422 (HQ) at 1080i and saw no problems. Has anyone found problems using FW800 with this codec?

Since uncompressed capture is possible over fw800 ProRes should be fine.

This is a confusing discussion. Capturing from a hard drive? It’s HDV, and it’s ProRes?

FW800 is 800mbps theoretical max bandwidth. ProRes is 200mbps, so it will fit. Uncompressed 1080i HD 8-bit is about 1000mbps, so it will not.

No tape decks use FW800. So you can’t capture from it. The AJA IO/HD interfaces with the computer using FW800. It does the encoding to ProRes itself, thus allowing video to fit over FW800. It can’t do uncompressed HD nor can any device because, as I just said, that is impossible over FW800.

I meant capturing to a FW800 drive and playing back from it. Sorry for the confusing wording.
