    Hi Chuck.

I have tried to shoot video with my D90 and the results are worse than disappointing. In medium to low light the camera seems to crank up the ISO or adds digital gain to achieve the video level it wants.

So despite using F2.8 lenses I couldn’t shoot anything I could submit to stock sites.

Now looking at the Panasonic GH2 for a better solution.

The best codec to use depends on what editing system your editor is using.

If it’s FCP then Pro-Res or Apple Intermediate are best.

If it’s Avid then using a DNxHD codec (various flavours for PAL and NTSC) is best. Not only is is quick to import but makes decent size files. You need to get the codecs from https://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=263545 and load them into the AE computer.

Thanks for the video Randy. I got it working, but…

Two things to note. The reason the switching wasn’t working in my example was the <= function node in the compare operator. If I set this to == then the switching works fine. <= stops it working.

Also I discovered that if I just leave out the compare operator and connect the oscillator direct to the range mapper and the other node the expression works just the same.

A million thanks for getting me this far, it has really given me the confidence to use Xpresso and open up the software.

    Thanks Randy.

Done all that. Now what I have I done wrong? There is no switching occuring as I move through the timeline. Here is a set of image to confirm I have done what you asked.

Feel I am close but missing something obvious.

Here is the project file if you want to look at it:

    Thanks again for your time.

    Hi Randy.

Just working through your example (got the oscillator plug-in). In the Xpresso XGroup how do you add ports to the final nodes “0” and “1”. I have discovered that you can drag them from the objects manager into the Xpresso editor, but they don’t come with ports attached so they do not show the “enabled” word. So I cannot complete the group.

Bear with me, I am more used to using After Effects.

    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Gary.

Downloaded them and they work fine. I had downloaded the trial of Media Composer 5 and assumed I had a recent set.

They all key perfectly although I am surprised that I don’t have to invert the key during import – seems unnatural somehow after years of doing it!

July 8, 2010 at 3:09 pm in reply to: Is AE the best solution for timelapse editing?

I have experimented with a number of systems and although a huge fan of After Effects I don’t use it for time-lapse.

I re-mname and number my JPEGs if they are spread over more than one folder and then use QuickTime to open a JPEG sequence. This then creates a full size (4888 pixels wide from a D90) sequence.

I then use Save As (not export, which doesn’t work) and create a QT Movie. This is huge but is self-contained and can be saved like a RAW image – ie untouched by Post.

I then bring this into Final Cut and edit it into a 1920×1080 sequence for zooming and panning. This last stage could also be done in After Effects, but for simple editing FC is slightly better. Render times are similar.

Finally you should keep three elements forever –
    1. The original stills (which could be zipped to save a little space)
    2. The full size QT Movie (although if you keep the stills you coould always recreate this if short on storage space)
    3. The final 1920×1080 movie in whichever format you prefer. I also produce a small WMV reference movie on my laptop).

    Hope this helps.

July 4, 2010 at 7:41 pm in reply to: What Lens should I buy?

    hi Micah.

I noticed that you would choose the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X wide-angle lens. I have that (for a Nikon) and it is a beautiful lens, but would it fill the sensor on a Canon 5D. On the Nikon it is a DX lens and it doesn’t fill the full frame.

If it does work on a 5D it would be perfect for me. Anyone tried the Tokina/5D combo?
