The OFFICIAL last day of summer is September 22.”
Well since apple is based in the USA, you could also consider the traditional American meaning of ‘the end of summer’ as being Labor Day weekend, which is this weekend. Or when school starts, which was last week for most.
Either way, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting on any significant update in the next 21 days.
Maybe they meant the end of the southern hemisphere summer, which is March 20th, 2012. That would seem much more likely.Scott Sheriff

[Jon Graham] “Just bought a used GY-HD100u. LCD works. Viewfinder doesn’t light up. I know the viewfinder itself works because I put it on another camera and it worked. Is there a setting somewhere I’m missing or is the camera’s brain messed up? Any suggestions?”
There is a setting that disables the VF when the LCD side monitor is opened. This can be set to this (to save battery power), or set to have the VF on when the LCD is open.
It is in the third page of the LCD/VF menu
MENU>LCD/VF>NEXT PAGE>NEXT PAGE>LCD+VF
If this is set to ‘OFF’ the VF will be deactivated if the LCD is open, or closed with the LCD facing out and operating.
If this is set to ‘ON’ both will operate all the time.Scott Sheriff

It seems you already might know the answer to this question, but here is my take on it.Yes, this is not as easy as it appears, and it’s a big jump from operating to directing, and not something learned overnight. The talent is relying on you to make them look their best. Often this means ‘telling it like it is’, and being critical and pointing out mistakes, even small ones. I have watched people in your situation let mediocre takes be the keeper because they were too shy to say something critical, and it was less stressful to let it slide. This leads to disappointment in the final product every time it happens.
I would say stick with what you’re good at, and what you enjoy doing. And pass those other gigs on to someone else. Perhaps you can find someone in the opposite situation to swap jobs with.
Or subcontract out those gigs, or the parts of those gigs to someone that is more suited to the task. Then you get the best of both. This is no different then farming out sound sweetening, graphics work, or color grading to someone with specific skills in those areas.
Doing things that your not doing well, is a real career killer. In the long run you might (or not, who is to say) develop ‘people skills’, but this is really part of what you are getting paid for now. If you are not delivering, word will get around and you might find yourself lacking enough work to develop those skills. It is better to fess up to clients that you are not up to a particular task, then to struggle and lose your credibility which could cost you jobs that you are more suited for.Scott Sheriff

It’s pretty clear this doesn’t work for you. And since there was no trial or demo version, what you really should do is ask for your money back. Money is the only thing apple seems to understand, so everyone with an experience like yours should just get a refund. If they have enough of these ‘customer service events’, they may be a little more motivated to fix this. Leaving feedback is futile. They have a long history of ignoring it, and the release of X is the most glaring example. And if in the future they ever fix this, you can just buy it then. Who knows, by then the way apple works the price will go down. They also have another tradition of making early adopters pay heavily for the privilege, only to quickly release newer improved versions at much lower prices.
Slightly OT, I have heard people making the “summer isn’t over” excuse for the lack of progress, notably that the end of summer is defined by the autumn equinox, which is true. However in America, which is where apple is headquartered, this often means Labor Day weekend, or when schools start back in session, not the equinox. Well school is back in session and all I hear is crickets. And the clock is running on Labor Day which gives them 8 days to get it done. Even the equinox is less than 30 days away.
On September 22nd, if there is no release of any significant update, I wonder what the new excuse will be?Scott Sheriff

Unless you have a lot of hours on the heads, most likely tape. If it was a camera problem, it wouldn’t fix itself. Occasionally a head clog can happen, and then clear itself without cleaning, but even this is pretty rare. You might have had a sticky tape, or some surface/edge damage on the tape. There is no confidence recording circuit in these cameras which is one of the features you sacrifice for the low price that doesn’t come into play very often, but when it does it’s a big deal. About all you can do is exercise standard tape handling cautions, and check the entire recording of anything that is mission critical.

That is funny that you say that. When I read some of the posts complaining about the old timers and how we are afraid of the revolution that’s coming, I picture a 20-something hipster, sitting alone, wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt, in a trendy urban coffee shop, typing it on an ipad, while his Macbook has a vimeo of some unheard of band going on it.

No. This is the same as trying to sink the boat you are sitting in. Which is one of the most perplexing, and prevalent traits of the newbies and the cult of X.
They spend a huge amount of time bashing the ‘Pros’ and complaining about workflows and UI’s that are “too complicated”. Perhaps they have no plans to become a mid-level or high end professionals, or use anything other than a basic workflow. If that is the case, why bother getting in the biz? Why would anyone that is at the beginning of their career want to lock themselves into the entry level phase of it permanently? And to rail on and on in a public forum that this is the future,you hope for, and are actively working to achieve? What kind of future is that? To pine for a future where all work is simplified and dumbed-down, the video equivalent of ditch digging, makes no sense. At least not to me.Scott Sheriff
