Could be.
I would think that royalties would have already been paid, or at least accounted for when they canned up the software. Or maybe not…
But if it is about licensing/royalties, why is this so hard to figure out, and decide if you can release something, and what the price structure is? Companies with a lot fewer resources than apple manage to do this every day.
This whole thing is quite perplexing. And now this off again, on again upgrade pricing for FCS3. Look at the B&H upgrade price deal is available, then not, and now in the other forum someone that ordered from the videoguys with the upgrade pricing is getting word of a delay on shipping.
It seems when it was time to secretly pull FCS3 from the VAR’s, apple managed to pull that off flawlessly. But when it comes to putting it back out, they can’t get their stories straight and none of the VAR’s know if they have a product to sell, and for how much. I just don’t get why a company as big, and that has the tech resources like apple can completely fail when it comes to business basics like customer service, communication and the distribution path for a relatively simple, and low volume product such as boxed software.Scott Sheriff

1. Cold effects batteries more than cameras. If you’re on the battery, you will see reduced capacity the colder it gets. On cold gigs, bring double the number of batteries that you would normally use. This goes for batteries in mics, radios, etc. It helps to keep your spares in a warm area, and you can often get more out of ‘dead’ batteries once they warm up.
2. Cameras generate heat, and some even have tiny fans in them, so cold is not really an issue for the camera. I used to direct a 24 hour ski race in Colorado. In the middle of the night the cold sometimes killed intercom headsets, mics, microwave gear, etc, but the cameras themselves were fine. Most of the cameras had big glass with no servos on them. The servo zoom on the handhelds got sluggish in the middle of the night when they were really cold, and I have seen that before on other skiing gigs with ENG style cameras. Actually too hot is much worse for cameras, then too cold. Never forget to turn them off before putting them in the case if the battery is still attached. And they can overheat shooting a lot in direct sunlight, or if you’re using one of those padded camera jackets in hot desert type climates. Unless your working at MacMurdo in the Antarctic, I don’t thing being too cold is going to be an issue for the camera itself.
3. Taking a cold camera into a warmer area can cause condensation to form on the lens, tape head, and other exposed items like switches, etc. The ideal situation is to always have the camera warmer than the surroundings. But this is more about sudden change, and not really about the cold itself. If you’re out on the field for a long time on a cold day, and go into the locker room to shoot you will probably fog up. If you are inside shooting for a long time and go out into the cold, you shouldn’t have any problem.Scott Sheriff

“dollar store” for EOL software.”That’s weird. Not that long ago they notified everyone that Shake was discontinued, and then dropped the price to $500. I guess when they laid off those FCP ‘support people’, it must have been those that new how to discount discontinued items.

That is a good question. The link at B&H Craig provided now says discontinued again, instead of out of stock for 14 days.

As i said, this is NOT a new licenses, it is an upgrade, for which they are asking the full license price for. I don’t have a problem with full price for new licenses either. Part of what you are paying for when you buy a full licenses is the discounted upgrades, which was in effect until 6/20/11 when it was canceled without any notice to the user base.

Don’t you still use FCS2?
I know a couple of people still using FCS2 that are so busy editing they’ve never come here or any of the other boards, and didn’t have a clue FCP X was out, or FCS3 was EOL’d. I guess they’re not very serious???Scott Sheriff

Sorry I was unclear on that. I’m in the Apple system as an existing FCS2 user purchased directly from apple, and that was confirmed by the person at the call center. The price I was quoted was $999. When I said that I had a valid serial number, from a previous version, and this is an upgrade, I was told the price is still $999 usd. My guess is that if we complain about this enough, it will eventually be resolved as an ‘oversight’, and the upgrade price will be offered. But as of right now, I was told there is no $299 upgrade for anyone.

So I just got off the phone with apple. Yes, this is true you can now buy FCS3.
But wait, there is a catch. Isn’t there always?
The catch is that it is $999. Period. No $299 for those that have exiting licenses.
It is very clever of them to defeat their critics this way. One of the biggest complaints is no more licenses of FCS3. But who is really going to pay a grand for EOL software, when three months ago, those with existing licenses could have got the same thing for $299.
I’m sure someone out there will applaud apple for this, but I find it a deceptive ‘bait and switch’ since those with existing licenses were told that upgrades at a discounted price is part of what we were paying for when we made the initial purchase at the full price.Scott Sheriff
