No I don’t feel your over-reacting. To many people, on both sides of the camera think of editing as an afterthought, as if it is nothing more than a data entry job.
Part of the problem is the general attitude of the ‘new’ editors. When I say ‘new’, I’m referring to those that never edited any way other than NLE. For some reason there is a huge demographic ‘subgroup’ in the ‘new’ editors that thinks editing is about the best plugin, the most FX, etc. Even where VFX is called for to tell the story, it is amazing how often the ‘new’ editors can’t break down a scene, and apply their craft without thinking about what they need to buy. Yes, I’m painting with a broad brush, but how often do we see posts where these folks are stuck because they are unable to innovate, and are “looking for a plugin to do xxx”. Its always about the FX, and not often about ‘what shot goes with what, and why’. Is it any wonder that others think editing is some type of IT job, and all you need is an Apple certification, and that makes you an editor.Scott Sheriff

I hear what your saying with the ‘fill ur up’ idea, but the problem with 32gig is you pay a per gig premium for those sticks even at places like OWC.
I thought 16 seemed like a reasonable compromise on cost per gig, so that’s what I did. It will probably get me by for a couple of years. I hope by then the 4 gig sticks will be priced better.Scott Sheriff

Apple sez 4gb if your working in uncompressed HD. That seems kinda thin to me. I say at least 1 gig per core, in matched sets.

Then next question is how do you run FCS3 aka FCP7 on a G5?

E-E stands for ‘Electronics to Electronics’.
It is the mode that the decks input appears on the output.
Professional machines usually have a dedicated switch. On a lot of industrial/consumer gear you can get this mode by pressing the ‘Record’ button.Have you tried to play a DV tape out of the deck to make sure everything is working?
If you can’t get the pass thru to work, and don’t have an analog capture card, you could always dub the footage to a DV tape and then capture that.

That article is painting with a really broad brush. Note that they said ‘some people’ and not ‘all people’. It really doesn’t say ProRes is a cure all for everyone. So, yes ProRes is a great tool in the toolbox, but its not the only tool. Don’t fall into the trap of doing what everyone else is doing, one size does not fit all. Do what gives you the best results, or solves a problem with the least amount of work.
A lot has to do with the GOP structure, if your footage is interlace or progressive, the color space, the image sensor (CCD vs CMOS), if the sensor is full raster or not and the content such as fast motion, sharp edges, patterns, applied FX. All these variables when added together in different combination can influence how your footage looks after it gets compressed, and/or transcoded. And even then, whether doing it one way, or another produces a ‘better’ image is subjective in a lot of cases.
That is why running a series of short tests would be best.BluRay is a whole different game compared to SD. Maybe a real expert will jump in on that. I don’t have much experience on BR.

Are you sure the deck is in E-E, and passing the video?
Or maybe FCP is expecting a signal from the deck with TC on it, which pass thru video won’t have. You didn’t say what your capture settings are. Change your device control to ‘uncontrollable device’.
Also try rebooting your system with the deck hooked up, and turned on. FCP doesn’t see some FW devices unless they are present at start-up.Scott Sheriff
