I’m upgrading to FCP7. How much memory is enough?

I recently upgrade hardware and software to FCS3 and I chose 32 gig RAM for the simple reason that I hope to not have to open the box for a good while.

I wanted to have bases covered if and when FCS goes 64 bit, plus Motion and Compressor can utilise more RAM that FCP. I also often have Color and FCP open at the same time and occasionally Motion as well.

Apple sez 4gb if your working in uncompressed HD. That seems kinda thin to me. I say at least 1 gig per core, in matched sets.

I hear what your saying with the ‘fill ur up’ idea, but the problem with 32gig is you pay a per gig premium for those sticks even at places like OWC.
I thought 16 seemed like a reasonable compromise on cost per gig, so that’s what I did. It will probably get me by for a couple of years. I hope by then the 4 gig sticks will be priced better.

No doubt they will but I am an optimist and expect a 64 bit FCP before then.

    Hey Richard remember me?
I have an early 2009 Octocore which is running okay on 8. I would double it if I could afford to.

I just booted up my new 8 core machine for the first time. It came with 6 GB but I’m probably going to get a lot more memory for it. I’m loading FCS now.

Don…YES YES I remember you. It has been a while. I’ve done stints at Crawford and Paul French and Partners before starting my own thing up. Contact me via email and we can talk off line. I’m rmartz@magicmartz.com or you can go to my website and pick up my phone number. I still remember shooting together out at Woodstock Baptist Church. Great times.

1 gig per core is minimum. I’ve been installing 16GB RAM when I order new Mac Pros.
