turned those on in compressor, saved as a new setting, and the 10 second test clip was taking 15 minutes to render. quit that.
As another test for the convert to ProRes workflow suggestion, I turned the pro res test clip into a flv in Media Encoder and compared to a regular DV test clip in the same settings in Encoder and the ProRes title quality was actually worse. So although I appreciate the advice, I don’t see going there.
My resolution is that in compressor, I changed the LAN setting to a lower data rate of 672, and saved as a new setting. it looks great. I’ll use this for client review cuts show, they’ll have a bigger frame than the 480×360 setting and the image looks better, without much increase in file size, so works for me
Still no clue why preset 480×360 straight outta fcp is abs fine, but when using same setting in Compressor or QT pro it’s ugly. Will remain a mystery it seems

tried a 422 test, and sent the 422 clip through Compressor (and also QT pro) and still the graphics look bad. Even worse than the DV sequence when compressed straight out of FCP. This way looks great and the data rate and size of the file is perfectly fine. Still just can’t figure out why i can’t get this quality using the 480×360 setting outside of FCP. The LAN setting is looking fine in compressor. and even the 360×240 medium quality setting looks better than high. bizarre

I’m using DV sequence because that’s the native compression from DV tape. Going up to 422 is not going to save me any time, and i don’t see how it will ever increase quality. will try it. The exported QT should be the same DV compression as the original footage.
I haven’t messed with the Compressor settings as well.
The oddest thing of it all is that using the QT expport in FCP of “Broadband High” looks great, while using the same setting in QT pro on the same footage only that it is exported from fcp first (either a self contained or reference)..still looks like crap. very odd.
(What looks good and crisp coming out of QT pro is the Iphone setting, but the frame size is 480×320, not the needed 480 by 360.) -
thanks, but there is enough room. i renamed the new drive the same as the dead one, and you’d like to think TM would just function as if the new drive was the old. And it comes close, it backs up the drive and just as its finishing it reads an error about not being able to finish.
Guess i shouldn’t have used the Finder to drag and drop onto the new hard drive. not clear on how to restore properly. -
thanks for the insight. thought going back to HD after the cutting in SD probably wasn’t going to help much. will stick with cutting in this DV Ntsc sequence. i bit too late to redo the graphics to work within the HD frame with the guides. Don’t want the ones already made scaled up.

believe me I tried to convince them. but they insisted on shooting in HD and deliver 4:3 full screen. I warned them of possible snafus and I knew it would be a bit of a pain when it came to graphics.
I ran a test, where I put on a DVD two of the same clips, one exported from the DV sequence and one from the DVC PRO HD sequence. And I just can’t tell the difference. Compressor is taking a long time to convert just a 20 second clip, so I wonder if it is still drawing the native image quality of the footage even when it was cut on a DV timeline.
Since I only get green render bars on the DV timeline, I’m thinking that I will edit the graphics and the rest of the project where I can see minor edits without rendering. Then, once final is approved drop the whole thing back on a DVC PRO HD timeline and render one last time, thinking that I should get back to the better native compression codec, before exporting to Compressor

The graphics are already almost done and built by a graphic designer in Photoshop and are SD size. So if I use them in the HD sequence they are scaled up and the distorted to fit the HD frame. They are in place and look ok but obviously don’t extend out to the edges. I feel like I’m just asking for trouble if i try to edit all the graphics in the HD frame.
Instead i have opened a SD sequence and dropped in the footage (which was framed for 4:3) now I want to add the SD graphics and be able to see if all looks in place.
I’m just surprised that I’m getting a red render bar when I keep the compressor setting ion the SD sequence to the native of the footage.
Like I mentioned in the first post, that doesn’t happen if I make the compression set to DV. But I’m worried I’ll be losing quality if I set it to DV.
Any thoughts on this notion?

the problem is that I have many graphics, animations etc that need to be dropped in to the SD frame first. Must make sure they are positioned well and in title safe, etc.

many thanks. tried your solution, but not getting the list when selecting multiple. got to do one at a time it seems. luckily it was just a very rough cut…not too bad
