Thanks for your help!
When I loaded up the computer this morning it told me there was a new update to FCPX, even though I updated to the latest version last night (weird computer gremlins) and now its working fine!
I also installed the new codecs, thanks for the link!

Did you get it working in the end??
I’ve just been handed some F5 footage which shows up fine in my sony content browser but it doesn’t let me export it. All the export options are grayed out and when I click export to FCP it just says that the required codecs are missing and it can’t export the media.
I have also tried Premiere pro & media encoder, both crash when they try to open the media.
Compressor and FCX both say there is no media/can’t read media – they are the latest versions of all the apps.Any help would be much appreciated as I’m at the tearing my hair out stage and have a client that needs to get the material edited asap…..eeek!
Thanks,

I’ve been having the exact same problem for about the last year, I finally did a clean system install over the weekend and started from scratch, downloaded all the latest drivers and updates. The first project i opened was fine and worked perfectly, the second was fine for about 10 mins then it crashed and i got the same BlackMagic Codec error…… Having the latest drivers and a clean install i’m pretty confused as to what the problem is and there is nothing else i can try to fix it. The only work around is to turn “view external video” off but thats not a solution, especially with clients coming to view their commercials.
If this is a blackmagic specific problem i’d happily get an AJA or Matrox card instead but i don’t want to do that and then find out its a FCP or system problem and i’ve just wasted my money. Thanks,

Hi rafael,
Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately i already know about re-adding the clip to the timeline after changing the alpha type. I’ve tried all of them and the they all generate the same result. I have figured out a work around though – if i import the clips in to AE and re-export them as RGB+A animations they work fine, so i still have no idea why they stopped working in the first place.
As far as the animation codec goes, I wasn’t the one who created the animation files….they were done by a 3D animation studio, because i have to re-encode these clips to get them to work anyway i guess i could use sheer (i’ll have ti look for that, hope its a free download) but i don’t know if there will be any added benefit as the original files are animation codec encoded.

Ok, I have found out that if i open one of the clips in the viewer and export it creating a new file then import that new file…. it works fine.
So i have a work around in the mean time….. would still appreciate any help because i don’t want to have to go through and convert all 80 files this way 🙁

September 2, 2007 at 11:39 pm in reply to: fcp 6 vanishing alpha, or rather not vanishingI’m having a similar problem with a series of tv commercials that we do where all the on screen graphics are animated on with QT files (animation codec with embedded alpha)
The initial change of setting the alpha to black fixes one problem so now they actually have their alpha channel in the timeline (is there anyway to set this as the preset or will i have to change them every-time i import a file with alpha channel??)
My second problem is now that if i try and change any of the parameters (position, size, crop, etc) the alpha disappears and and is replaced by black, this is hard to get around as these graphics always need to be moved or resized so they can fit in where space allows.
Thought it might be worth noting that these files have worked fine for over a year now with FCP5 and the problem has only arisen since i upgraded last week to FCP6.
Any help appreciated,
Thanks.
