  • Doug— thanks much for taking the time to share those additional two options.

    Much appreciated.

  • Thanks for the caution about flickering.

When I exported that 16GB file it played-back unacceptably poorly— it hesitated badly.

I imported that that 16GB into the Compressor app and exported from there using the preset shown in the attached screenshot. Compressor spit-out a 1.47GB file that looks good and plays-back smoothly.

All is well in the world once again. 😌

    Thanks again, Mads!

  • Mads— thanks much for your prompt reply!

Great feedback. 16GB seemed large for a project containing no video, but I suppose 200+ photos of that size do add-up.

I’ll do as you suggest, Mads— export and downsample.

Thanks again for your expertise and generosity!

The camera manual includes nothing about bit rates. It does say, however, that MP4 is half the FPS of AVCHD, at 30. It also says the following in distinguishing the two formats:

    AVCHD Progressive
The PSH in AVCHD is a mode that allows motion pictures to be recorded at 1920×1080/60P, the highest quality that complies with the AVCHD standard. Select this format to record (HD) high definition motion pictures for playback on your HDTV using an HDMI connection.

    MP4
This is a simpler video format best used when extensive editing is needed, or when uploading videos to the internet. Select this format to record standard definition motion pictures for playback on your PC.

So, it sure looks like MP4 is inferior to AVCHD, at least on my camera.

    Thank you, Claude!

Here’s what my import window looks like with the SD card in the card reader, Noah:

Yes Noah, my camera records both AVCHD and MP4 (H.264). I’ve always recorded using AVCHD because I was under the impression that it’s higher quality than MP4— but I can’t utilize the AVCHD footage without first rewrapping it… a real drag. Based on what I’m seeing in my camera’s manual it looks like I’d have no problem working with MP4 (H.264) in FCPX— but what kind of a reduction in quality can I expect compared to using rewrapped AVCHD footage? Any idea?

The drives are Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache.

I’m quite sure the drives are fine. It’s my blissful ignorance that has me in a quagmire. I have a mess here with audio and video out of sync, etc. It all began with me needing to rewrap my footage because my camera and FCPX aren’t compatible. Everything has been a cluster since.

I’ll do as you suggest Noah and reimport the footage… this time when rewrapping I’ll be sure my audio sample rate is at 48.

    Thank you!!

  • Ok James, thank you.

  • Yes Robin, we’re talking about rewrapped footage. I’m unable to retrieve the original footage from my SD cards because my camera and FCPX don’t play well together. I still can’t wrap my head around that glaring AVCHD incompatibility. Believe me, I’m rewrapping out of necessity.

In closing this thread I won’t try to recount the novels-worth of hair-yanking things I’ve tried in order to resolve this, but I do believe I’ve found the solution. I still don’t know how it happened, but my project frame rate was set a 59.94 and my clips were at 23.98? I discovered this by opening one of the rewrapped clips in QT7 and getting info on it (command I). As stated in my previous post, I checked the frame rates of both the project and the clips a couple days ago and they were both at 59.94? I rewrapped the clips to the 59.94 frame rate and all appears to be well.

    Sigh…

What I wouldn’t give to have one of you experienced editors by my side during my editing hair loss sessions.

Thanks once again for your time, Robin!! Much appreciated.

  • Thanks for the sharing of your time and expertise, Robin.

I had never before modified field dominance settings, so I researched how to do so in FCPX and tried the available pop-down options— no improvement using any of them. All my footage is 1080p, as an aside.

Then I began exploring frame rates, again thanks to your feedback. I discovered all my footage is at 59.94, but my project was set at 23.98! YES! A eureka moment— I thought. I tried to increase the frame rate of the existing project but the frame rate pop-down was grayed out. So, I created a new empty project with the desired frame rate of 59.94 and I copied and pasted the entire contents of my problem project into the new project. I WAS ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED this was going to make life beautiful again, but nope— that same visible nastiness remains.

In this newly created project I again tried the available field dominance settings for the heck of it, but again without any change.

What in the world could this be, Robin? Anyone?
