I am aware that Premiere is deficient in how many audio tracks you can use and also audio FX. I started as a audio guy (and it’s still 1/2 my business) prior to video and I NEED to have the ability to use my Waves plugins in editing. I shoot a LOT of events (plays, music based video) and usually have 20+ audio tracks AFTER I mix down the pit and so forth. I treat my dialog and singing differently in a mix as well as needing to be able to blend a full chorus. I usually have:
Leads 1
Leads 2
2nds
3rds
Guys
Girls
Stage L-C-R
and sometimes individual character tracks
and depending on the pit, I may use a stereo mix I do in Cubase or stem it out in 8 or more subgroups
I add two dialog track as well and split them as I go in editing.
I usually have about 6-8 subgroups as well in Vegas and use audio FX’s on each track and group
This is one reason I need to keep Vegas around, even if I do my video in another NLE.

I too am in the process of learning Premiere, are you taking a specific course from someplace online?

In my limited comparison at this point, most things can be done in both, but the ease of them varies from program to program.

Let me know how you make out. Once I finish a big edit in the next week, week 1/2, I am looking to “hit the books” in Premiere as well.

My understanding is that Vegas has not had an update support for Nvidia cards in years. I have been using AMD cards since they have been the only one’s that are recommended for newer card support.
I would LIKE to get newer Nvidia cards to work with all my Adobe software and actually have better preview (not really as concerned with render times) of 4K in Vegas. That is why I asked if Vegas is looking to ever update it’s GPU capabilities.

As Nigel asked, what version of Vegas and Nvidia card are you using, something recent?

I HAVE had an anti-virus find a false-positive issue with these, but they are fine and very useful.
There are loss-less versions that may get you to a format that is better to use.

I have pretty much used Vegas exclusively for my video business for 13+ years. I am now moving on to Adobe for some of the reasons you mention (as well as me finally fed up with Vegas issues that I discussed on prior posts).
I think Adobe has the market right now, there are some things that just work better on Adobe (and some on other NLE’s) but it is becoming an industry standard.
Can you do pretty much anything with any NLE, absolutely!!!! Are some clients desiring to work within the constraints of a specific ecosystem, YES!!
I am also looking to gain some employment at places that are Adobe houses and I need to know how to work in that environment fluently and that is what I am working on now.
In a nutshell, I disagree that we should be required to use specific tools to complete a basic job, NLE’s should be up to the editor. However, there are times we as editors need to work within the parameters of a clients wishes.
We can drive many different ways to arrive at the same place, at time we must conform to specific “roads” if someone we are riding with desires it.

What is your rig? I have tried on a 12 core Mac Pro (2010) with 32GB of RAM SSD drives and a Saffire 7950 (3GB) video card, running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Also, on my Devils Canon i7 4790 with a Radeon R9 290 (4gb) SSD drives and 16GB ram.

Had crashes on both and stutter playback too.

One reason I went and bought a year’s subscription to Adobe….

After checking out Davinci Resolve and having similar issues, I have started my migration to Premiere.
I have been a Vegas user since version 6 or 7 and have used it very extensively. However, I can no longer deal with all the crashes, non-fixes, new bugs with or without the old bugs, slower render times in 14 vs 13, lack of ANYTHING new since 2012, poor preview quality and the list goes on…plus, if I have a client in they say, “is that old, the interface looks like a toy,” ….sheesh

I will continue to use Vegas as I migrate, and I KNOW there are issues with Adobe stuff and I abhor the “renting’ of software. However, I envision myself seeking employment that requires knowing and using the Adobe Suite in the future, and honestly, I need some third party FX and such (Rampant videos primarily) to work out of the box instead of the usual “workaround” issues in Vegas.

I wish I could stay, I hope that maybe MVP matures and actually gets better instead of window dressing.

That is my take on this whole thing, VERY disappointed for the most part with MVP14.

How long ago did you try Davinci? Version 12 & 12.5 does multicam from my understanding. Seems like since 12 in it has matured quite a bit…
