That was what I expected…but just wanted to confirm with several people. I vaguely remember there being issues early on….but wasn’t sure at this point…
Thanks!

I have had pretty decent results….For some reason nesting a credit roll in a project caused constant crashes for me. Other than that WAY more stable than 12. Renders slower than 12 for me to MPEG 2’s than 12 with same exact project and same exact render format.
Being stable is a must for updating…Scott Francis

May 14, 2014 at 12:09 pm in reply to: Is Vegas Pro 12 a sufficient Platform for Sound Mixing a Feature Film (Sony VS Cubase)Each stem does require a mixdown. I usually pan my sub hard left and right and do two in a stereo mixdown. Once I bring them into Vegas I separate them into 2 tracks and that saves me 1/2 of the time to mixdown than doing subgroups in mono.
The stems (subgroups) can be mixed in Vegas FAIRLY smoothly, but the more you process and the more tracks I tend to have Vegas get more unstable…just being honest. I wish it were not the case. SVP13 is a bit more stable than 12. I use Waves plugins and they do take a bit of resources…
Hope this helps!Scott Francis

May 14, 2014 at 2:14 am in reply to: Is Vegas Pro 12 a sufficient Platform for Sound Mixing a Feature Film (Sony VS Cubase)Stems are more like sub-groups. When doing plays I record the entire pit, so for example, I may record brass as individual tracks, or woodwinds and “stem” them out as a group instead of individual tracks. Keep the number of tracks in Vegas down. I also process dialog and singing differently and will split that out in Cubase as well.
In small audio mixes, Vegas is fine, HOWEVER, when I have like 5 HD video tracks and 20 or more audio tracks with processing on them, Vegas tends to get janky, crashes and audio buffers constantly have to be adjusted to get decent preview and/or to keep audio in sync with the video.
If you only have like a music bed track, dialog, ADR, and special effects or so, Vegas should be fine, a pit mix with dialog, backups, pit and overheads and stage mics, (20+ tracks), Cubase is my goto first…OR if the score is recorded and needs to be mixed as well…
Good luck!Scott Francis

Are there formats that you can only use on a Mac vs PC? I am not aware of this and thought is was more a player/editor issue. Again BM is bad at “getting back to you” on things. I sent them two emails about the ATEM stream and SVP and such, and the silence is deafening!! LOL!!
Thanks John!

Since our go round with BM’s video that is created with the ATEM TVS, I am curious to know what it encodes to. As I said before, I can’t find any info on it on their website and also manual.
It works with Premiere, Avid, FCP and such, so I was wondering if it did with SVP. I use their Intensity card (PCIe) to capture from my Beta and VHS decks in Vegas, not sure if this would the same way or not…Scott Francis

I was considering using Bootcamp for use with a Macbook Pro, so I didn’t look into the specs for a driver. One of my biggest issues with BM is they have TERRIBLE details with specs for items. I have used about 5-10 of their devices and there is so much you find out after you purchase them.
Also, just looking at the BM website, you can download their desktop video software to work with Windows and that is under the support for the UltraStudio….

May 11, 2014 at 5:33 pm in reply to: Is Vegas Pro 12 a sufficient Platform for Sound Mixing a Feature Film (Sony VS Cubase)I use both and Cubase is lightyears ahead of Vegas with audio handsdown. We usually mix everything in Cubase and then export “stems” to import into Vegas for the final mix. I have had issue with FX’s, audio (ASIO)drivers, buffer setting, yada, yada, yada with Vegas….
Pro tools is not as easy either, being in the game since ’97 I have used Cubase since ’99 and have tried others…In my experience, Vegas falls short, especially when you add a lot of FX’s and also a fair amount of video tracks. Audio looses sync and video preview suffers.Scott Francis

BUT when things are finally “ready for primetime” much of their products are amazing…just wait a year before you buy!!
Thanks for the input John!

Thanks Dave,
Really appreciate it.
My ONLY concern is video preview. I often have 4-10 HD streams that i cut back and forth from (in a multicam/multi-take event) and need to be able to preview well. Crossfades KILL me and even RAM – preview is iffy at times.
I see there are 7000 series, R7 and R9 AMD GPU’s, and significant increase in preview quality?
I also have issues when I bring in audio (most often 12-14 tracks with FX’s) in addition to video…stuff grinds to a halt and crashes often….Thanks for you help!
