Thanks, John. Sounds like the RTAS plugins need to be made a bit more reliable. Audition actually does accept OMFs. I’ve exported them from FCP 7 and imported into Audition on many occasions with great success. I tried using Premiere as an intermediary between Avid and Audition, but without any success. Avid doesn’t make it easy to export OMFs and Premiere doesn’t take AAFs properly, from my experience (even though Adobe says it does).

Thanks, Andrew. I’d love to know what you use for a DAC. One of my friends who is in audio post suggested the M-Audio Fast Track USB Audio interface to go along with the Genelec speakers.

What I have now is pretty terrible. Simply, my Sennheiser HD 380 pro headphones and the built-in speakers on my macbook pro. One day, I’d love to have a proper mixing studio, but I’m currently editing in a medium-sized, non sound proofed room on the top floor of a home in a quiet residential area. I want to figure out what is the best set-up I can get for my current location and £500.00 budget.
I never paid too much attention to sound before, but I’ve really become excited by Adobe Audition CS6 and since I’m moving into Avid and using its RTAS plugins as well, I’d like to start familiarising myself with Protools.

Expected playback is computer speakers, tablets and smartphones, however I believe that all projects an editor produces should sound as good as he can possibly afford to make them. My budget for audio monitoring hardware at this point is £400 – 500.00 maximum ($770 US max). I’d like to know the best set up I can get for that price.

I don’t think the overwrite method is the solution, because when I loaded a stereo aiff from Audition into FCP 7 viewer and overwrote to the timeline, there was a slight phasing issue (my mix was one track of a presenter speaking) However, when I brought in a .wav stereo file from Audition and did the same, the phasing was gone. I heard Larry Jordan say that it’s better to export .wav files

Ah, I made a breakthrough. When I export a .wav file, as opposed to a .aif file, FCP sees the export as a proper stereo file, instead of 2 center panned mono files. I decided to try this because a Larry Jordan tutorial said that .wav was the default file type and that we should be using that. I find this strange though, because isn’t .aiff Apple’s preferred format?

Thanks, Michael. I was thinking that perhaps the unaffected parts of the frame wouldn’t be recompressed, but have since learned that in a lossy codec the entire frame is recompressed and that in an uncompressed codec, only the affected parts are.
