Thanks, Juan. So a codec cycle does degrade the frame as a whole, not just the part of the frame that has been manipulated? I’m assuming this is the case, because Apple ProRes 422 is a lossy codec.

Thanks for your response. If you were making one ProRes file for grading, would it be best to remove all resizes and repositions and have those recreated in Resolve to reduce the amount of re-rendering done of the footage? If the resizes were rendered in FCP (on export of the single file for the grade) and then brought into Resolve and graded, those shots would be subjected to an unnecessary number of render passes, would they not? Also, the film currently has a 2.35 crop on it. The crop should be removed and recreated in the grading system, correct?

Hi, Michael. The relinking issues were actually with Avid. After creating the AAF, I created a new Avid project, brought in the new AAF and had issues getting the original AMA linked files to connect to it. I tried every search permutation. I eventually got everything to connect through various permutations, but it was a real struggle and even still I had a PMM error once everything did connect (apologies, I can’t recall the exact error name) . I’m not sure why.

I’m fairly new to Avid. I’ve heard many people complain about the uncertainties of working with AMA and their fears about things all of a sudden not linking. That has been my experience with Avid AMA thus far. We currently don’t know who the colourist will be, so don’t know what grading system will be used – most likely Nucoda though. The Nucoda does accept AAFs and I’ve had some limited experience linking an Avid produced AAF to Alexa ProRes files, but it was very difficult.

Perhaps an EDL is the way to go, as this is a simple cuts and dissolves project.

Thanks for the suggestion, Michael. I eventually figured out that I had to click the ‘AAF Edit Protocol’ option. Unfortunately, I had relinking issues afterwards though.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown of your workflow, Oliver. It’s funny you mention EDL as being the most widely accepted format. I’ve heard a lot of people say “Who uses EDLs anymore?”.

I’d like to be able to create an AAF that links directly to the original ProRes files. I figured out if I checked the ‘AAF Edit Protocol’ option, Avid would let me make a linked AAF. But even still I had problems relinking the AMA ProRes files to the newly created AAF. I’m not confident that the colourist wouldn’t struggle with this as well.

Hmmm…. If this is happening to you now, I wonder if this is a bug between the latest mac OS and FCP 7. Perhaps this is finally the end for FCP 7.

In my case I had to make the hard drive with the media offline. Then, I had to open the autosave and copy the sequence from the autosave….then I had to open the main project and paste the sequence (renamed edit 002 for example) into it. Then, when I brought the hard drive back online the the files would reconnect in the main project. There was no way to make the autosave link up properly.

So glad you understand my view on things, John. Regarding this issue, last week at BVE trade show in London, I went up to the Avid booth and asked them about this very issue. They told me that you had to use a combination of tabbed bins in conjunction with saved bin layouts that were tied to saved work spaces. I guess if you really knew how those things worked together you could keep clutter down a lot more, but it seems like a lot of unnecessary work. In order to reduce the amount of bins popping out, you must open all your bins for a project to start, then tab them and save that as a bin layout. This would reduce the amount of having to shift things around during the edit.
