Mike,
Thank you very much for that clear, concise and to the point explanation. I appreciate it immensely and will use the plug in.

Gary,
So how should I handle the capture of my 30frame NTSC footage for cutting in a 23.98 timeline? Should I capture at 29.97 and then use the Nattress to convert it? I though reverse telecine was designed to change NTSC 30 frame to 24 frame.

Steve,
I’ll go for the plug in. Thanks. Where is the best place to get it?
Also, are you able to address the second half of my original post? Am I doing the correct thing by using the reverse telecine tool after capture of 30 frame material?

Steve,
Thanks. Please excuse my inexperience with FCP as I’m using it for the first time. I’m an old school AVID editor. Do you have the time to walk me through what I’d have to do to make the conversion using compressor? Or can you refer me to an article with instructions?

Jeremy,
I will create a new sequence immediately after configuring easy setup and then I will begin capturing. I have trouble with the idea that you can create different sequences (settings wise, that is) within the same project. In the AVID once your project settings are configured, only one type of sequence comes up.
I cannot tell you how much I aprreciate your time in helping me. Thanks a million!

Jeremy,
Thanks for the details on easy setup.
If I capture properly I should expect to end up with a gray render indicator bar. If I should end up with an olive green bar, do I understand FCP correctly in reading that as an okay to cut, just to expect a downgrade in playback resolution?

Jeremy,
Thanks for the quick response. Forgive my inexperience. I’m an old-school AVID feature editor used to telecine and have no experience with DV cameras. I’ll watch my nomenclature from here on in. My stuff is shot with a Panasonic in 24pA mode.
Due to my lack of experience with FCP, I’m not sure exactly what you mean by use easy setup and create a sequence. I think you mean that I should establish all my settings using easy setup including all of my sequence settings.
I had a funny feeling that the capture now mode was having cadence issues. Am I correct in thinking that’s way shorter clips came in w/ no field dom.?
Regarding log an capture: All my tapes have many TC breaks. Will I need to go through them to get ins and outs, log those perameters and then batch capture?

Jerry, Thanks for responding. I have used the show all option in the easy setup window and have quadruple checked all the settings just to not take anything for granted. I cannot figure out why I would, at best, get a green bar in the video portion render status indicators. That doesn’t bother me that much as I am used to editing on a AVID on which I’m always looking at something at a lesser resolution, but I’m completely baffled as to why a short clip captured via the “NOW” process would come in with a NONE in the field dominance property column and a long clip would come in with an EVEN field dominance property and show orange in the video portion of the render status bar. I was hoping this anomaly would be something symptomatic of a problem that you would have seen before. Am I mistaken in expecting a clip capture done with the advanced pulldown removed and the subsequent loading of that same clip into a 23.98 sequence timeline to show gray in the render status bar?
Thanks!
