Same Wacom Intuos 440 for clicking but Elements for grading…
You just can not work properly with either a mouse or the stylus alone.
With Scratch, yes you can, because the whole screen acts as a color ball, but the small Resolve balls, not really.
There is an App from Tangent worth checking out if you have an iPad.
It’s virtual and not even cheap, but still better than looking down, click on it, looking up, moving it, looking down again, clicking the other circle and so on.
That is maybe enough to find out how Resolve work, but not cool for work.
So…Tangent App , Wave, Elements, The Big one…that are the options

I hope you cached to a light media file (ProRes or DNxHD) and not to something heavy like Uncompressed.
Settings – General settings – Cache frames in …
If the old silver-back can’t play ProRes422 it is really time for an hardware upgrade 🙂

I agree….codec manufacturing and licensing brought that to us.
I am very happy I could convince my TV studio to drop Avid all together for color work.
We are not even using it’s effects or media generated by it anymore.
We went back to a classic offline/online workflow where they are digitising everything into XDcam during the edit, and I go straight back to camera footage.
In an environment of 40 AVID machines and one Resolve, that is quite and achievement 😉
When going back to Avid from Resolve for broadcasting i only export .mxf files which we directly slip into Avid , no import, no export, no encode, no trouble.
And thanks to .aaf my online workflow is now quite easy too, just the time effects have to be done in Smoke because …well you know why.

Don’t crush it, bend it 🙂
even the smallest amount of “life” in dark blacks is better than a digital 0.
I never go under or over, but i draw extreme curves than are almost like tangents to infinity.
    That’s the way…imho

Well, the first thing is that broadcast save is not 1023 but 940.
Here is a (kinda shallow but understandable) article about some level talk.
    https://www.adhishyajnik.com/broadcast-709-levels-and-rgb-levels.html
When working for the internet you will encounter a whole different set of restrictions.
But yes, in a way you do not need to care for BCS.
In the olden days we had something like SUPERBLACK or white and that information was used to carry masks in one video stream.
So stuff you left in the area below 16 or above 235 was cutting a whole in your video stream…fun times 🙂
Its a bit like the audio at the side of a film strip.
So if you creatively decide to blast away your highlights or totally crush your blacks, that is entirely up to you or your client.
Visually it will end up black or white in digital media but as soon as someone tries to use that in a Video Color space environment you might encounter dark grey or bright grey instead of your black and white, and that has to do with the way it is interpreted fron the host.

Well…there a professional compositing programs like Smoke, Nuke Studio and such wich ARE capable of playing back and also use disk cache for performance efficiency .
After Effects is not on that list imho.
It can do nothing without all the plugins and i reach it’s limit quite soon when working on complex shots.
Nuke or Fusion are waaaaay better when it comes to that, but no, they also do not playback nicely.

But one thing…if you have a mini-monitor you should have installed Media Express too.
This is my go-to app for pure playback purposes…this an Final Cut X.
    And of course VLC…

I tend to use a creative tool like Resolve only if I want to change thing, not for playback.
And the performance in the edit and media pool page always have been very poor.
But once loaded into the Color Page i always have great performance….on the video output that is.
I think it is in BMDs best interest to provide playback performance using their hardware, wouldn’t you agree ?

It is because you are lacking a proper monitoring solution.
I have the same problem when Smoke is open and took control over the Decklink card.
If you are looking for even a little professional use, get yourself a mini monitor.
Also the MacBook screen is just terrible for this kind of work…
And yes, it’s old too 🙂
A four year old laptop…i mean, what are you trying to achieve here ?
Checking camera files ? thats the only thing I could imagine it for.
The Edit page is not optimised for playback either…I would suggest to use Final Cut Pro instead.
Speedgrade also has been optimised (like any other proper grading tool) to run DPX/Cin files from a proper Raid.

  • And suggest not going back and rely on that technique but get very familiar with ColorTraceTM because it is probably the best feature in Resolve.
It’s the only one which is true magic and you can also use it for cut-downs, reformat versions, it carries your scaling info through and so on.
Remote grades lock you down to only one primary version where you will encounter problems rendering different local versions.
Just my opinion of course 🙂

  • Round tripping is something i tend to do in the summer in the mountains with friends.
You know who you are 🙂

Forget all that meta stuff..it wont work..
Make your editor think as an offline editor…he does content, you do stuff.
If working from proper Alexa/Amira media you only need an AAF.
When you grade on that and then a weak later get another edit you are able to re-use your gradings, scale and time changes will come through too.
But I tend to render .mxf files most of the time if they really need to finish in a No-Love-Editing System.
Best is to feed Resolve with subtitles, overlays and what not and finish there.
Color trace is doing magic…real magic.
New shots will of course be ungraded, but CT takes care of your tracking and animations..
If the Editor chose to change length and all you have to extend your tracks.
But seriously, if they are married to their edit workflow, it might be better to get a grading plugin.

    Have fun 🙂
