When dealing with DSLR footage this is what I use:
    CAMID_Mag_Date

So for example A001_29102012 is Cam A, Mag/Card 1 and it was shot on October 29, 2012.

On the odd occasion (it’s only happened twice in the last 2 years) where we have multiple projects shooting simultaneously, I’ll add a Client Key to the end of the above string.

For dual system sound, I change the CAMID to S, so i know straight away that it’s come off a field recorder. The rest of the string stays the same.

I translate this info into FCPX angle metadata as well, so if I’m using Multicam and I sync up various angles, the priority follows accordingly. A at the top and S at the bottom.

I have an Intuos 4 Medium. I find it’s a good size for Final Cut and for AE/Smoke.

The Bamboo ( I think that’s what the lower spec Wacom is called) feels very different, and not as nice IMO.

I think if you want to master technique then high end commercials are the benchmark. It’s hard sometimes to separate the edits from the Flame tweaks, but there’s a lot that can be learnt from analysing the way these spots a put together.

Off the top of my head, I’d say check out the Jaguar XF spot for an example of a commercial that uses a whole host of high end edit/compositing techniques.

Going frame by frame can be really helpful at first in recognising patterns, and you can then try them out on your footage and build up a skillset that way.

Not sure about the shoulder, but it’s easier on the wrist for sure. I found when I first switched, that I needed to change my sitting posture as well.

See if you can get your hands on a demo unit before shelling out the money. I know some people who tried it and didn’t like it all, even after using it for a week.

    Auditions are fantastic.

Not really Jeremy. In Smoke you click and drag up to Zoom In and click and drag down to Zoom Out. It’s very gestural, fast and very precise.

Perhaps you’re right Bill. But if web pages can scale automatically across iPads, iPhones and laptops, then X probably should as well.

Regardless, the UI design is not great. I really like Scratch’s interface, it’s stark grey with blue accents – for a Smoke/Flame rip off it’s left Autodesk struggling to catch up (look wise, not in terms of tools).

X’s dark gray with those clip arty icons is miles behind.

I’d say their ability to innovate when it comes to Manufacturing and Engineering continues apace. But the visionary product, whether they’re able to continue knocking these out, that’s the question. The last new product was what the IPad? And we’re 4 generations into that life cycle now.

I’d be shocked if there was anything visionary about the new MacPro. They sell a small number of them per year, and R&D probably reflects that.

Logically, Solo should accomplish this. Does it?

Yes the Animation Menu on the clips sucks. But you don’t have to use it, all the properties a keyframable in the Inspector, just like in FCP 7.

And I think you do X a disservice when you say it’s not suited for short form. If you can wrap your head around the way it works, then you can cut pretty much anything on it. In fact for TVC’s I find it lightning fast to assemble various versions to show the agency reps when they come in for their first session. Smart Collections, Auditions, No need to Patch stuff to make edits, they’re all things that make the sessions go quicker.

Trimming is also not as bad as the godawful magnetism animation makes it out to be. There are times even now where it’ll spook me out to the extent that I go and make sure my edit starts at the TC it’s supposed to.

Zooming in and out of the timeline could be better. Smoke’s click and drag is phenomenal, the CMD+/- is a pain, especially if you’ve got your skimmer parked at one place, your play head at another and there’s a clip selected in the Timeline.

I agree with you that icon design is tacky and they’re generally too large.

As for clip heights, I find I can generally get something I’m happy with it from the default options. The option to display Roles in 10.0.6 seems like a good addition as well.

And I keep saying this to anyone who asks, X is easy on the fingers. I end up clicking a LOT less than I did in 7.
