I got an Intous 3 6×11 for a dual 20″ WS monitor setup and I love it. I have a Graphire at home, but I like the feel of the Intous more. The soft surface is nice, and I think it is more sensitive. I never use the programable buttons, but I know I should. I have the the lower half of the pen button mapped to ctrl+click and the upper half set to scroll (verticle & horizontal) and it works wonderfully. you just have to get used to not always clicking on an icon, but clicking near it and doing the drag box.

Well since you have an Intel it may not apply to you, but two things.
1) there is a firmware update for your card (but not mine) available on Apple website
2) try download the free trial of Magic Bullet Looks or BCC5FXPlug. both work awesome in FCP but do not work in Motion 3. If you apply BCC it turns the clip black, or if you hit the edit button in Magic Bullet it will launch the other interface but does not pass the image through.
So far the best I deduce is that this is a problem with how Motion 3 is coded to handle 3rd Party FXPlug plugins and the interaction with the ATI drivers for this card. Since you technically have a different card this problem may not be reproducible on your system. Again this is all unconfirmed test, I am to placing blame on any of these product manufactures. BCC and Red Giant have so far been very helpful with me and all the testing that I have done. We are still looking for a solution.
Thanks for giving it a shot though,

We have the ATI Radeon X1900 (which is the Power PC PCIe version) for 2 of our 2.3 Dual Core G5s. Sounds like this guy doesn’t have PCIe so it wouldn’t really work for him.
That said, recently we have had problems with 3rd party plugins in Motion 3 and currently suspect a conflict with this specific graphics card. This is not confirmed, but if anyone else has a similar setup I’d love to talk to you about running some simple tests.

Apple says SOL. Since it is only 3rd party plugins (Magic Bullet Looks also has problems) that have issues it is not their problem. The application itself works just fine. So it is up to the 3rd party developers or you could hope for an update from ATI, but since it is an older card that probably won’t happen. It just sucks cause we bought these cards because they were the fastest that Apple ever sold for a PCIe G5.

I have discovered a new lead on this case. We have 4 nearly identical machines here in the office. Dual 2.3 Ghz G5s with 8 GB RAM. Two of them have the stock Nvidia GeForce 6600 graphics card, while the other two have been upgraded to the ATI Raedon X1900 graphics card. The two Nvidia machine do not have any problems, while the two ATI machines have the exact same problem where Motion does not pass an image off to the MB Looks Builder and/or cause items that have BCC5 filters applied to them turn black.

I have a lead on the problem. Well, maybe. We have 4 systems in the office. two run with the stock GFX card, a Nvidia GeForce 6600, and two have an upgraded ATI Raedon X1900. The two with the Nvidia work fine, while the two with the ATI are currently having the same issue within Motion.

Hey Peter,
We have a few identical systems here, and last night I was able to try it out on those, and of course it they work flawlessly. This makes me think that there is a problem with my install of Motion. I tried to delete the app and reinstall but this didn’t work either. This makes me think that it is some other file somewhere that needs to be deleted before the reinstall. Maybe you could provide a list of files that I should delete and then try to reinstall Motion?
Thanks for the help.

Reinstalling did not work. Deleting preferences did not work.
i am working in a NTSC D1 comp. I still get a black frame when I apply the filter to a shape generated in Motion. The only BCC plugin that I have found that works is the BCC Fire Generator.
Thanks for looking into this.

well, in our case, yes and no. our Geffens were very temperamental and it was nice to have an extra pair of CAT5s and we were trouble shooting. Also if i remember correctly we had a few cables that did not work with the Geffens but worked find for internet access. why, i have no idea, like i said they were temperamental. our Geffens only worked as matching pairs as well (same models, but one set did not like being switched with anything other than it’s partner it was shipped with). i think using KVM extenders is awesome, and central machine rooms rock, but they are kind of a bitch to get setup correctly and flawlessly. and yes, it is super helpful to have someone around that has done it before.
