  • Wacom Tablet – Quick Question

    Hi,

I’m considering changing over to a tablet, but have one question:

My favorite feature of the Mighty Mouse is the ability to scroll a page or timeline SIDEWAYS with the roll-ball. It saves me having to click on the little arrows to navigate.

Can the tablet/pen do a similar thing?

    Thanks,

    Wayne

PS – and also, if you can recommend what size/model I should go for – I’m running 2 x Dell 24″ Monitors.

    Thanks,

Probably the 6×8 or 6×11 Intuos 3 is what you want.

I’ve never used the pen to track sideways in a timeline or application window, but the pen is fully programmable to do whatever you want. Three buttons on the pen itself and I think four buttons on either side of the tablet.

After reading all the great advice here about which tablet to get brand/size = wacom/largest you can afford, I bought one last month.

I decided to go for a portable one (read cheaper) and got the wacom bamboo fun medium (8.5×5.5inch active space), just under $200. Name aside it’s been a great introduction to tablets and while not as fancy as the intuos 3 ones I am finding it very usable in a dual monitor setup, and still very customizable, but it has only 2 buttons on the pen and 4 in total on the tablet.

Also the pen buttons (not the tablet ones for some reason) can be mapped to scroll/pan so you can scroll up/down/sideways/slantyways by clicking and holding the pen button you map to scroll/pan and tap-dragging the pen like a mouse on the tablet. Works great for me.

I love the Wacom but wouldn’t suggest too big a size.

I grew up using tablets back in the DOS days before mice existed and have never looked back (and never experienced RSI either)

Using a large one you’ll be drawing by having to sweep your arm whereas with a smaller one, the action is more like doodling with a pencil, with your wrist resting on the surface. The resolution of the Intuos is very high so that’s not a problem.

I’ve had a number over the years and now go for the A5, but even then end up mapping to a smaller area.

Thanks all for your input – much appreciated.

    I’ll give it a try.

One last thought: I SWEAR by the 6×11 with dual monitors… perfect size for functionality AND preserving some desk surface space for other stuff…like scripts!

I got an Intous 3 6×11 for a dual 20″ WS monitor setup and I love it. I have a Graphire at home, but I like the feel of the Intous more. The soft surface is nice, and I think it is more sensitive. I never use the programable buttons, but I know I should. I have the the lower half of the pen button mapped to ctrl+click and the upper half set to scroll (verticle & horizontal) and it works wonderfully. you just have to get used to not always clicking on an icon, but clicking near it and doing the drag box.
