Okay, this is starting to make sense. This is a best case scenario and if I had the hardware then external preview of 23.98 material would be easier to deal with than 29.97.
Walter, good point about how useful measuring things according to streams really is. Guess I’ve only used it in the past as a broad measuring stick then saw what kind of performance I would get the way I edit. Thanks for the reminder and good luck on the new movie! -
My bad. I’m still learning the mac and looking to the top menus is something pretty foreign to me. Thanks for the point in the right direction! I noticed a couple strange things, but didn’t want to hijack the thread anymore, so I posted a new thread describing my results of the test and how this doesn’t seem to make sense to my experience.

Agreed. Vegas also handles this well. Very easy to apply fx to clips, track, or whole project. All nles should have this ability.

Thanks for that post. I’ve been running the tests on my FW400 drive and can find how many MB/s my drive runs at, but I can’t find a listing for how many streams it’s capable of. I’ve tried all the tests and opened the text and graph options, but haven’t found anything listing streams. Am I missing something obvious?

Actually, I bought a mini for just that purpose. It works okay, I guess, but I’m not terribly impressed. The real problems for me are that the GUI and setup of FCP is so different from my PC nle that I’m not catching on very fast and also that the flashy things like Motion are beyond the mini’s power. I’m actually thinking of getting a G5 of some ilk just to see what kind of performance I can expect from fcp.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it. I believe my problem came in thinking that what I saw in the Canvas window and cut on would be the last frame in the first clip, when in fact it is really the first frame in the second clip. I believe I got confused from how things work in the viewer. When I marked an out from there and dragged it to the timeline it was exactly where I wanted. So I thought using the razor would be the same basic thing, but obviously it isn’t and it works differently.
Had I had a little more sleep I might have figured that out. Oh well.

Thanks for the help again! Finally figured out the problem. The sequences were set to 29.97 even though my preset in audio/video settings was for 23.98. So I tried changing each individual sequence’s settings. Each time I tried that the sequence disappeared from the timeline and the browser. Talked to a friend who said this happens to him as well. I wondering why this hasn’t been fixed, or at the least substitue “disappear” for the different frame rate options.
Anyway, things seem to be working now with the new sequences. Thanks again!
