October 21, 2005 at 7:50 pm in reply to: Deleting Render Files After Picture is Locked and on DVDWell, you would definitely know better than I as I’m still pretty green with FCP. I have only really used the Media Manager to make copies NTSC DV (DV25) copies (my “offline”) of 10 bit uncompressed digibeta material (the “online” stuff). That did work fine and I have been able to switch b/t the offline and online many times w/o incident.
I’d love to learn how to use the rest of the media manager w/o mangling things. I’ve bought nearly every FCP DVD tutorial available so I’ll go back over them and see if they have anything on the subject. -

October 21, 2005 at 9:12 am in reply to: Deleting Render Files After Picture is Locked and on DVDI’ve trashed my render files a few times. It sometimes helps when things are going crazy in FCP. I like to rename my project as I work on it, so I end up with huge amounts of render files. Deleting them is not dangerous as the worst it can do is require you to render the project. Just make sure you have things well organized and are only deleting the render files and you’ll be fine.
There’s also a way to delete all of your project’s captured media and define ‘handles’ say 5 secs before and after your in and out points. But that requires the Media Manager and no one trusts it, so I’d avoid going that route. -

October 20, 2005 at 8:09 pm in reply to: PCI-Express Could Improve Performence 10 foldIs that where the logjam is with SATA? You see them listed as capable of 150 MB/s or 3.0 Gigabites/sec, but are told real world even the 3 Gig only run sustained at 65 MB/s. The whole thing is a bit of a mystery to me.

October 20, 2005 at 4:26 am in reply to: PCI-Express Could Improve Performence 10 foldWow, that’s very educational. Thanks for that. I was wondering though, as apparently you can add additional graphics cards now, could you just add an extra card and and extra monitor and acheive the same basic result? I mean could you have say 2 monitors for editing and a third (through DVI) for previewing from FCP, Motion, AE, Boris Red, etc? Or, would this only work with FCP’s DVI preview (forget what they call it)?

Wow! That’s a pretty serious investment, especially the Quadro card. Poor man that I am, I’m more curious about the NVIDIA GeForce 6600 or 7800 GT.

October 15, 2005 at 2:57 am in reply to: Finalcut OMF’s to Nuendo, does it work ??? Deadline closing inRight, I’m sorry, Wes. The fault definitely lies with Nuendo. That said, I REALY REALY hope Automatic Duck figures out a way to add keyframes to the front and tail of all audio clips to work around Nuendo’s deficiency.

October 14, 2005 at 10:28 pm in reply to: Hard Drive exploded, need to recapture, how screwed am I?“You mean there’s no timecode associated with the earlier captures? You can’t just select the offline material and recapture it via timecode?”
I’m sorry, it’s a little tricky and that’s what I was trying to explain. I captured at 29.97 and then used cinema tools to remove the pulldown. I then made my edit from the 23.98 material that Cinema Tools made. Unless I find a CD somewhere that has it backed up, I think I lost the FCP project files of the capturing of the material as well as all the 10 bit uncompressed 29.97 files and the 10 bit uncompressed 23.98 files. The only thing I have is the NTSC DV (DV25) copies made of the 10 bit uncompressed 23.98 files.
I’m actually a bit confused how timecode works, but I don’t think I can batch capture the missing 10 bit uncompressed 23.98 files as the decklink cards I have access to will only capture at 29.97. Basically what I’m trying to do is trick FCP by 1- remaking the missing files (capture the clips at 29.97 as best I can to the same in and out points, then use Cinema Tools to make the clips 23.98)
then 2- make the current DV25 files offline, then reconnect them to the new 10 bit 23.98 uncompressed files.
Again, I don’t know very much about timecode, but I would think my new 23.98 files would have the same timecode as the old ones since the timecode is locked on the digitbeta tape, correct? So, I’m thinking that even if my new captures are tiny bit off on their out point (again, the in point should be fine as I’ll have the burn in to go by) the timecode should be the same and I should be able to substitute the new files at will. But again, I’m very new to FCP and timecode is not something I know much about.
So, does my reasoning seem fairly sound, or just a waste of time? Thanks again for the help! -

October 14, 2005 at 9:34 pm in reply to: Finalcut OMF’s to Nuendo, does it work ??? Deadline closing inAlso, Automatic Duck only transfers keyframed volume changes into Nuendo. That means if you use the pen tool anywhere on the volume of the clip then it carries over. But, if you just raised or lowered the volume without a keyframe then it won’t carry over. Hope I’m explaining this okay. Anyway, check their manual as it explains it much better than I just did.

October 14, 2005 at 4:32 pm in reply to: Hard Drive exploded, need to recapture, how screwed am I?Jerry,
Thank you for that. Do you think it might create a problem though if the out point of my captures are slightly different when I recapture? The in point should be pretty easy to spot, but the out point might be off by a second or two.

I second that hope. PCI-e is long overdue and would be a huge addition for PowerMacs. I really hope they come soon as my Mini just isn’t cutting it.
As a random vent of anger, who wants to watch movies on an ipod? If you want portability, buy a portable DVD player. Call me crazy, but I’d rather watch a movie on a decent TV or maybe even go the novel route of going to a theater. Sorry. Random vent of anger over
