Funny, I was just looking into how to do this also. I tried going into applications, renaming FCP, and dragging the file out of the applications folder, but the install still wanted to upgrade. Eventually did the same thing to Compressor, LiveType, SoundTrack, DVDSP, & Cinema Tools and dragged all of them to the desktop. Still no go. So then I tried renaming and moving the FCP System Support Folder as well as the, LiveType, DVDSP, & GarageBand folders from the Library to the desktop. No go. Finally tried renaming and moving the FCP Additional Easy Setups folder from the main area in the Macintosh HD. That didn

Actually, I filled out their whole tech support thingy that made me give my name, serial #, etc. That was a week ago and still no word. Thanks for the suggestion though, I may just try support at boris…
The thing that gets me is that it seems to me what I’m asking is something a salesman should be able to answer off the top of his head. Red 3GL is actually their current version (thought that I saw that v3.5 had come out, but apparently it was my imagination). So basically I’m asking if their flagship product will run on the latest Mac workstation. This has to have come up before now. -
Thanks, Jerry. The problem is contacting these people is a mess. Sent a tech support email to Boris on tuesday and called and left a message. Didn’t heard back. Called again on friday and spoke with sales, perhaps they’ll care more if they don’t know they already have some of my money. Hopefully they’ll get back to me soon, but the sales guy was going to have to talk to tech b/c he had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned the new G5s. Their software’s not bad, but I honestly don’t understand how that company stays in business. After all this, contacting Combustion didn’t seem too inviting.
I just thought these have to be programs that people who use FCP have and surely some one here uses one of them and a dual core or Quad G5. It would be so much easier b/c working with the system is as slow, awful, and inefficient as you would expect. -

About the updates, well Studio would be $199 and I’ll either do that or wait and get FCP6 or whatever it’ll be called. But Red and Combustion are academic versions so I don’t think I can even upgrade them.
So things could get quite pricey if Red 3 and C3 won’t work on a PCIe G5. Any thoughts? -
Shane, thank you. The thing is I may be doing some work with uncompressed SD and possibly some HD that’s more demanding than DVC Pro HD. I’ve been trying to check out the differences and what the PCIe can do that the PCIx can’t, but I’m not getting very far. I know that PCIe sends info both ways, but so far it doesn’t seem to affect using a Kona LHe (could have sworn it did before when I did my research) and as I recall the speed tests for an x800 vs the 7800 graphics cards were very close. So, are the only advantages of the PCIe in hard drive performance for high end users and the ability to add additional graphics cards for extras monitors?
Is this all you gain and risk possible compatibility issues with old software and hardware if you buy PCIe?

1- Not sure what you mean by group of keyframes. Do you mean keyframed volume changes in individual clips? The only way I know is to delete each clip’s keyframes one by one. I believe the toggle on the bottom of the screen only turn visability on and off, but the keyframes are still applied. So I’m not sure if there is a faster way to do this, but I hope I’m wrong.
2- This just doesn’t sound right at all. It’s happened to be and I had to restart the computer, then all was fine. Might try that, then the old trashing preferences and possibly render files if all else fails.

Just wanted to thank you both for the help, I appreciate it. If the Mini had a DVD burner, I might wait a little longer. But, oh well. I originally bought it for my Mom and I couldn’t justify a DVD burner for someone who doesn’t even know how to use a mouse.

Good question. Truth of the matter is I’m a nobody and as much as I’d like it, I’ll probably never have a movie put back to film. So I don’t really know. My advice is to ask the company doing the transfer what they want. They’ll be doing all the work after all.

My other compter died today so I post all my bookmarks and I had a link to a site that would explain this whole thing for you start to finish. But the idea is that you shot the film at 24 fps exactly then when you transfered to video your picture went to the lovely world of 29.97 and 23.98 instead of 30 and 24. Meanwhile, no adjustment was made to your audio so is also needs to be brought to the wonderful world of fractions. So you have to do the .1% adjustment as was mentioned or eventually your audio and video will drift out of sync.
I believe the general rule is that the drift is unnoticable unless your take is longer than 30 seconds. When in doubt, you could always try to get ahold of a program like Nuendo that will batch convert all your audio (in this case only dialog). Then just make all your dialog offline in FCP, then reconnect it and direct it towards the new audio with the adjustment added. Really shouldn’t be too much trouble at all and no resyncing.
I’m sure there must be other programs that will do the batch convert, but I just happened to watch a Nuendo demo on their site the other day that showed the batch convert.
