Roland is right. Use Particular 2, do not make the layer 3d, turn on shading, and move your light around.

I would also reveal a glass texture on the door when the flash happens….. find some dirty glass texture, there are several included with Optical Flares, set its transfer mode to either screen or add, and bring is opacity up when the gun flash happens.

Put your video layer below your text layer and set the video’s track matte to “alpha matte”

A few things come to mind.

Increase your computer’s memory.
Work at a lower resolution. Half or fourth.
Make you ram previews at a lower resolution.
Use images that have been resized. No 21 Megapixel images. 😉

Thats all I can think of for now.

What exactly are you doing that makes it run slowly?
