I just got After Effects, and it runs kind of slow.
Should I have my computer set to maximum performance, or maximum visual performance? And just what are some things I can do to help with the speed?
    Thank you.

A few things come to mind.

    Increase your computer’s memory.
Work at a lower resolution. Half or fourth.
Make you ram previews at a lower resolution.
Use images that have been resized. No 21 Megapixel images. 😉

Thats all I can think of for now.

What exactly are you doing that makes it run slowly?

You can get better computer hardware, you can optimize your After Effects settings for your given hardware, you can simplify your project, and you can change your workflow.

See Improving performance [link] in the AE docs for a comprehensive list of suggestions to help you work faster.
