February 20, 2013 at 11:09 pm in reply to: Becoming solo ‘video guy’/one-man army at my company…advice?Hi, hope all is going well and are right on track with your one man show and seems everyone else has provided great input as far as the business side, however as for the equipment “Keep it light”… I find that a few items have made life easier for me when no other hands where available.
I understand you have kino lights and im suggesting these based on their portability, form factor and cost.
ikan ID500 with the pro batt adapter(runs a long time)… these things are solid, rather bright, the CRI is good overall, can be gelled and they are rather portable.
https://www.amazon.com/iKan-Corporation-ID500-Light-Black/dp/B0084ZYAB8if size and budget dont allow i would get the ikan id508https://www.amazon.com/Corporation-Bi-Color-Light-Black-ID508/dp/B0084ZY8HE it is smaller lighter, and seems a bit brighter. it runs on 1 or 2 sony dv batteries (just make sure you carry extra batteries)

Hi Corvin, I do agree with the people on the forum. The fac is that the talent makes better eye contact with a mirror system. So im thinking ikan, check out their PT Elite It’s under $600 at B&H https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/835808-REG/Ikan_PT_ELITE_Elite_iPad_Teleprompter_Kit.html
It utilizes your ipad and the system is not only easily readable. It also is “Very light weight” you should not have a problem mounting it most tripods, However I would suggest something like the manfrotto 546 tripod with maybe a 501 head, if you can still find one.

I have and it just depends on what you are doing, I been using ikan for a while now and i like em a lot. The reality is that you will chose the right rig for you depending on a few factors including:
- Accesories you are using
- Lenght of shoot
- Mobility
and overall look of your project…
A Glidecam, can work very effectively but it had a rather long learning curve and need to be balanced each time you pretty much set your camera and with each different lens configuration…
In there other hand a shoulder rig, positions the camera like traditional broadcast camera. It allows you to carry multiple accessories on your shoulder(follow focus,Sound recorder, monitor, light etc.)Shoulder rigs usually are good for semi-long periods of time when you need to be on the move.(I usually run with the ikan Ofly (https://ikancorp.com/productdetail.php?id=630) a the Zacutto Z-finder and the ikan follow focus.
Hand held Here is one i like from ikan too https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/887739-REG/ikan_ele_ev2sf_Superfly_EV2_Handheld_Rig.html is more for shorter runs when you want to pack light and still have stabilization and flexibility. You can still attach a follow focus a matte box and maybe a light and a small monitor like an ikan VL5…
Anyway i hope this helps.

Thank for sharing it is pretty cool. have you checked ikan? They have some great rigs and battery options that are pro grade as well But will not break the bank. including a super affordable “DV battery power option” currently under 75.00usd @B&H.
They also have some rather neat rigs starting around 300 here’s more info: https://ikancorp.com/productlisting.php?id=186

Hi, It sounds to me like the HDMI you are using might be bad, I would try a new one.
Let me know if that helps.

Hi, I would suggest the VK5 from ikan. It has DSLR Scaling and peaking, It’s 399 new from ikan
https://ikancorp.com/productdetail.php?id=457
or they have it listed for 239 on the ikan outlet store.

Heres another helpful chart comparison of ikan monitors.

Best regards and hope you find what you are looking for.

If you want a dslr feel, with no time limit and have the budget. look at renting C100 or C300 they are pretty cool (slr like) but kinda pricey.
otherwise try a BMC awesome exposure latitude but be ready to do a bit of color management.
If you cant get a hold of the above or just want to go simple and effective try a Sony Xa-10 or XF105/305, they are pretty good on low light and have xlr inputs great for interview recording. -
Indeed check on CRI, smaller cheaper LEDs tend to spike sharply on the green channel inherently… you can always gel to color correct it, but you will drop the light output a bit.

Thank you for the heads up it’s very nice to know that they are responsive.

Interesting point however. I recently started using ikan and i got their D7w for a bit under 1200 at B&H https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/896295-REG/ikan_D7W_5_6_3G_SDI_HD.html
The picture is great. besides i now have peaking, waveform, and false color. which is great for what i do since i use it on a 1D MKIV and i can’t do the magic lantern hack.
