You might want to make sure that you are running the latest available XDCAM AMA plugin for your version of Avid from the website. As Michael said, Sony create this plugin themselves, so you would expect that it will support the latest firmware updates etc.

This guide will tell you the latest version that supports your software:

As far as I am aware, the ADVC110 can be used as a time-based corrector, so I am surprised you are seeing this delay. Where are you watching the captured clips from – the final files e.g. in Quicktime or in FCP?

Have you tried connecting your source directly to a TV to verify the audio is in sync on the source? I’m sure it is, but its always worth checking!

Do you have any other kind of capture card in the system but listening back to the audio, for example, via the built-in soundcard on the Mac?

I must admit, I’ve tried editing on a 13″ Macbook and I really don’t enjoy the experience. Because of the smaller screen size, I find it quite hard to manipulate the workspace in a way that I find comfortable to use, but then I do get a bit frustrated if I have to constantly move windows and panels around whilst editing.

I am sure if you put enough time into it, you could possibly set up a series of workspaces that could be quickly switched between if necessary and that you would find comfortable. Maybe I just like too much screen real estate when I edit?

As an aside, have you considered the compatibility of Final Cut 7 and Mavericks OS which would most likely be the OS that is shipped on a new system? It might be worth taking a look around and seeing if anyone has tested it for compatibility yet. As FCP7 is no longer properly supported, I would be conscious that some issues may occur from this.

What happens if you render the clips out after adding the Colorista effect?

For ease of use, I would personally recommend re-encoding the AVCHD to the Cineform Go Pro codec, especially for projects with a lot of footage. I appreciate that it is another process to undertake, but it has saved me from a much more frustrating experience in the past.

Maybe try encoding a few clips and adding the effects you normally use just to see if it handles the footage better.

Sometimes making sure that you don’t have loads of stills previews (single-frame previews of the footage along the clip track in the sequence) all along the timeline, and no audio during scrubbing can sometimes help a little. It is sometimes these little previews that eat up the memory and slow down a good scrub.

As Walter says, the type of footage you are using can make all the difference. In my experience, some AVCHD can be annoyingly jerky when scrubbing, and in that case I will generally re-encode that footage to the GoPro/Cineform codec by installing the GoPro Cineform Studio software and using the codec to re-encode the files in Adobe Media Encoder.

    What specs/footage are you using?

September 16, 2013 at 8:53 am in reply to: Does anyone use Prelude?

I tried it out for the first time a very short project last week.

I have never really enjoyed trying to log clips using Premiere and at the last minute decided to try Prelude. I thought it was brilliant for my purposes for this project.

I just wanted a way of going over the footage that I had, rename and update the metadata for it. However, I soon discovered the ease of creating and naming subclips, which considering I was filming an event and had many clips of the camera just ‘rolling’, it made much more sense to try and break down these longer clips for ease of use in cutting the project together.

I didn’t make a rough cut in PL; once I had the clips all properly sub-clipped and labelled, it was a doddle to quickly find what I was looking for to put together a rough timeline in Premiere.

Very intuitive, and very useful. Larry Jordan has discussed it on a few occasions in his blog:

My advice would be to just try it. Its very straightforward, so just import some footage and see what it can do!

  • You are correct; 4K isn’t an option in the free version of Go Pro Cineform Studio.

  • I agree with this. There’s nothing worse than having an issue with playback and not being able to figure out which format is causing the problem.

I find the (free) Cineform Go Pro codec a dream to edit with in Premiere Pro.

  • I haven’t had issues with Premiere struggling with multiple file formats for a long time. I often have a mix of 5D, AVCHD, XDCAM etc.

The golden rule I personally follow is to work out which format make up the majority of the footage and and choose the project preset that matches it.

Mark – That is a great story. I enjoy the tales of people who set out to do one thing then end up falling into something completely different.

Andrew – Thank you – some great advice there. I am working hard at the moment to really make sure I know about a really broad range of skills (most of which is refreshing myself creatively whilst USING various programmes, equipment etc…these have moved on a lot whilst I’ve been a tech and although I know how to use many of them, it has been a long time since I’ve used many in a creative way over a long period). Persistence is also becoming a theme! I am not presently on facebook but I will sign up to get access to the groups you recommended.
