PP CS5 Scrubbing Speed
Posted by Kenn Schulz on September 13, 2013 at 1:36 pmWould a really fast graphics card improve my scrubbing speed in PP CS5? I am currently using an nVidia FX3800 card (1GB). Thinking of purchasing a GeForce GTX 680 (CUDA) 4GB. I assume I would also have to upgrade my PSU (current 425W) to a 750W or greater.

September 13, 2013 at 3:47 pmThe 680GTX would definitely help your playback performance in Premiere in general. I would definitely make that upgrade. That 3800 is extremely low spec at this point.

September 13, 2013 at 5:10 pmSlow scrubbing could be caused by low storage throughput (i.e., the system can’t read or seek into the file fast enough to get through it), or it could be caused by high decode complexity (i.e., you have highly compressed footage and not enough CPU power to decode the frames fast enough for smooth scrubbing).
Upgrading your GPU may help elsewhere, but it will not help if one of these is the cause of your slow scrubbing.
What are your system specs? What kind of footage are you scrubbing?

September 16, 2013 at 9:01 amSometimes making sure that you don’t have loads of stills previews (single-frame previews of the footage along the clip track in the sequence) all along the timeline, and no audio during scrubbing can sometimes help a little. It is sometimes these little previews that eat up the memory and slow down a good scrub.
As Walter says, the type of footage you are using can make all the difference. In my experience, some AVCHD can be annoyingly jerky when scrubbing, and in that case I will generally re-encode that footage to the GoPro/Cineform codec by installing the GoPro Cineform Studio software and using the codec to re-encode the files in Adobe Media Encoder.
What specs/footage are you using?

September 17, 2013 at 9:53 amSony NX5U for aquisition (1080p). AVCHD Files come into PP *.m2ts. Using HP Z400 WS / 3.06 Quad CPU / 24GB RAM. External storage 6GB G-RAID + 4GB LaCie HDD. nVidia Quadro FX3800 GPU.
720 SD footage, no problem. Problem arises when I appy MB Colorista (mainly) to correct WB in 1080 footage (AVCHD). Spacebar plays audio okay, but footage is “jerky”.
Maybe the best solution at this point is to convert footage with GoPro Cineform? I wish to keep 1080 since most of my clients have large (40″ or larger) LED TV’s.

September 17, 2013 at 4:48 pmWhat happens if you render the clips out after adding the Colorista effect?
For ease of use, I would personally recommend re-encoding the AVCHD to the Cineform Go Pro codec, especially for projects with a lot of footage. I appreciate that it is another process to undertake, but it has saved me from a much more frustrating experience in the past.
Maybe try encoding a few clips and adding the effects you normally use just to see if it handles the footage better.

September 17, 2013 at 8:40 pmLast I checked Colorista does not thread well. Launch task manager and select the performance tab when the Adobe project is up. Then go under options and select always on top. Scrub or play through the timeline and see what the threading looks like. I would be surprised if it threads well.
Either way upgrading your video card would be a very good idea with that system. A 660Ti video card would likely be more than enough but a 680GTX would be overkill and significantly better than what you have now.

October 6, 2013 at 5:18 pmJust found out that my Z400 workstation isn’t designed to handle more than a 600W PSU and my GTX760 graphics card requires 550W (min.). Does anyone think I would be “safe” with that combination? I dunno.
