As with (I believe) all LEDs, they are manufactured in China. If you search Litepanels “manufactured in china” you’ll find ITC complaint documents that Litepanels filed regarding importing their LED products from China for sale in the US.

There’s a possibility some of the housing is made in the States, but I’d point to those trade documents as fair proof that at least the lamps themselves are manufactured in China.

    I second Bill’s suggestion on the GH4.

I’d also suggest looking at Blackmagic’s offerings. I’ve been shooting on the Pocket Cinema Camera (aka BMPCC) and the Cinema Camera (aka BMCC) and have had stellar results from both. The BMCC comes out to a little more than $2k AUD, but it’s well worth the money and available in several mounts.

The lowest I’ve commissioned someone for was $100 per finished minute, and it was easily the worst experience I’ve had working with a composer. Just like anyone else on your project, you almost always end up saving money in the long run by paying more for a more experienced/talented person.

I will say that on shorter films (under 20 min), I’ve had luck contacting and working with composers who are fresh out of school. They work for lower rates in exchange for the experience and with the smaller scope, it’s easier to walk them through the queues.

  • I’ve used the Tascam DR-60D and gotten fantastic results. It’s portable and affordable. But if you are thinking about recording directly to camera, go a quality XLR adapter like the BeachTek DXA-SLR Pro. It mounts right to your camera, it’s rugged, extremely portable, and allows you to record great audio right to the camera from your quality mic via XLR inputs. Phantom power, limiters, AGC disable, the whole nine yards.

I’m seconding Craig’s vote for NeatVideo. Have used that many times to remove noise (from severe to hardly noticeable). Worth every penny.

FilmStyles filters are awesome for color grading.

“Mask 8 points” by Alex4D makes masking a lot easier. (It’s an 8 point mask up from FCP X’s 4).

DaVinci Resolve Lite (not a plugin, but a great free third-party tool).

    7toX if you’re going from FCP 7 to X.
