  • Why are you using Handbrake to encode? Handbrake is good for ripping DVD’s off for your iPad or computer. It’s not a robust encoding solution for professionals (especially when you want fine control over all aspects of your export).

Like Tero said, I’d use Adobe Media Encoder, Premiere Pro, Quicktime Pro, Telestream Episode, or Sorenson Squeeze. Since you already have AME and PPro I’d turn to that first – both more than capable of making h.264’s for distribution.

In using AME or PPro you don’t have to go to an intermediate format. You directly export your timeline. If I do need a high quality master I use ProRes or DNxHD as my intermediary files before applying different distribution compression settings (i.e. Blu-Ray, DVD, web, etc).

[jake blackstone] “Somehow, I very much doubt, that you even seen the way Smoke operates. It is a free 30 day download. You should play with it and then you should opine about it’s operation. “

Quite the opposite actually. I’ve used SMAC since it went Mac back in 2010. It’s a very complex, confusing, yet deep program. 2013 goes along way at making it more “friendly,” but underneath the simple veneer of it acting more like a traditional NLE is still the deeply complex Smoke that many have come to know and love/hate. But it holds an interesting model for being able to jump quickly between editing, compositing, and color grading. A model that I prefer over the traditional “suite” of apps pushed by Apple and Adobe where you’re perpetually round-tripping or dynamic linking. Staying in one app has its advantages (and disadvantages).

[jake blackstone] “On the other point, just being able to cut, dissolve , slip and slide doesn’t make an editor. Editing is VERY complicated process and not an easy thing to do.”

I agree. Editing is hard business. It’s hard to code for, hard to maintain all the proper OS support, plugin support, drivers, etc. Hard to please everyone from corporate video production to non-profit editors to wedding videographers to Hollywood editors. However, that hasn’t stopped BM from moving Davinci Resolve forward at a lighting pace for both major OS platforms and creating a completely free version of this once extremely expensive software.

You may be right. Maybe Resolve is too solid and they don’t want to risk it. In that case, BM could make a whole separate NLE app that plays well with Resolve. It seems to me if they continue down the “we make cameras, switchers, mixers, recorders, playback cards, etc” route then at some point they’re going to want to make the essential hub that all that data flows into, namely the NLE. So while Resolve may not be the app per se, I think it reasonable for BM to eventually put out a competitor in the NLE space. It’s another step in vertical integration for them.

It seems to me it would also be the next logical step for Resolve – make it into a NLE.

    (1) It’s already got a timeline/conform are with ability to do some simple editing (roll, ripple, dissolves, etc.)
    (2) It’s used as the ingest point for the BMCC
    (3) It talks well to virtually all other programs via EDL or XML

In that sense it would start to challenge Symphony, FCP, PPro, and maybe even Smoke. This is more how I wish Smoke would operate. A standard NLE and then with one click into a different “room” or “tab” you’re now in the color correction area that looks like a standard Resolve. You color, jump back to your timeline where you could move to another “room” for effects (could be layer based or node based – either way). It wouldn’t surprise me if in the next few years Resolve becomes more of a hub/conduit and starting point for many in the post industry, instead of something that is a cul-de-sac used near the end of the post pipeline.

January 7, 2013 at 9:43 pm in reply to: Auto Save crap

You may also need to run a “repair permissions” on whatever disk you have the auto-save vault set to as the folder the auto-save is attempting to write to may have gotten its permissions messed up, thereby stopping it from the ability to write a new file there.

If that’s the case….it would be nice if PPro notified you of that!

Sorry for the lost work. That sucks. I always tell my team – Save Early. Save Often. And Save in Versions.

Saving in versions on your local disks sort of creates your own backup as you go. But Walter’s idea is great as well…using a Dropbox service to backup select folders that contain your project files.

December 13, 2012 at 9:14 pm in reply to: Is 8GB RAM enough on the 2.6 Retina Macbook Pro?

You can live with 8GB for sure. But I’ve never heard anybody regret having more RAM in there computer. And remember that whatever you have in that MBP from the factory is all you’re ever gonna have. The RAM is not user-replacable. So will this be enough RAM for you in 2, 3, or 4 years when you’re still using that machine to do all work?

Unless they gave me $500-$750 off the price of the computer, I’d send it back and get more RAM. And if they gave me that much off the computer, I’d turn around and sell it on eBay or Craigslist, pocket the extra change and go get the computer with more RAM! 😉

[Douglas Morse] “However, the near impossible upgrade path of the new iMac (including RAM or harddrive) is atrocious.”

The 27″ iMac the user can easily replace RAM easily….small back door on the iMac gives the user access to all 4 RAM slots. The 21.5″ not so much. The hard drives on both models are difficult to get to unless you like removing the screen.

December 11, 2012 at 5:03 pm in reply to: Adobe updates?

Per your original question as well – Adobe seems to be currently on a yearly release cycle with their software. Even numbered years see a major point upgrade like CS5 to CS6 (2010-CS5, 2012-CS6, 2014-CS7, etc.). Whereas, odd numbered years provide a dot update CS5 to CS5.5 (i.e. 2011-CS5.5, 2013-CS6.5, etc.). Releases are usually announced around NAB in April and ship late May to early June.

This has been the past for the past 3 or so years. If past performance is any indication of future performance I’d say that we’re due for Adobe CS6.5 Spring 2013 and Adobe CS7 in Spring 2014. Adobe has been a pretty furious update path the last 5 years…I don’t see that slowing down.

  • [Harrison Gruber] “USB 3.0 is many many many times faster than FW800.

I didn’t see his computer specs anywhere in the post. However, given that his export is taking quite a while moving to h.264 I made the assumption that he was also using USB 2.0, which in comparison to FW800 would be a bottleneck. If he was on a newer MacBook Pro his encode to h.264 would probably be a good bit shorter. My guess is that he is running a 3-5 year old MBP…probably of the Intel Core Duo or Core 2 Duo variety.

But I probably shouldn’t assume….I know what that nets me!

  • [Andy Sims] “I don’t think Plurayeyes 3 is out for Windows yet?

You are correct! My apologies. It appears v3.0 is in development for the PC. I guess it’s time to Mac then! 😉

As for your problem it may be that PluralEyes can’t match the waveforms (background noise, recorded too low, recorded too hot). I’ve had it fail on stuff that it shouldn’t. Unfortunately, it seems like it either works or it doesn’t. Do you have the “Try Harder” option checked? Or that the clips are in “chronological order”? Those options may help it narrow down and get something in sync for you.
