    The Quicktime engine is 32-bit. Period. Apple never developed it further. So anytime you do something that utilizes Quicktime Player in any application you’re employing a 32-bit engine. That’s Quicktime. 32-bit, nothing more. PPro is a 64-bit app which can run Quicktime but it does suffer a bit performance wise as it has to engage with Quicktime and its limitations and legacy code. I don’t see it as a good or bad thing, it’s just the nature of Quicktime. Beware of the limitations. And Tim was likely just adding another piece into the reasons for potentially longer renders.

    If you left the file as a mp4 PPro would use it’s own engine to process that footage and may be a bit faster (or it may not….again it depends on several factor listed above).

  • Setup a new sequence with correct settings. Go to your old sequence and copy the clips in the timeline. Open up correct sequence and paste.

    You’ll need to adjust the Scale/Distort for the clips in your new sequences (but you can also copy/paste that attribute as well).

    Should be a simple fix.

    Once you use Sony’s Clip Browser that is re-wrapping the mp4’s as mov’s. It’s still using the same XDCAM EX codec in either wrapper, but you are re-wrapping the footage.

    It largely depends on your total workflow whether or not you want to re-wrap something. If you’re just editing in PPro and then exporting a finished product, I’d say save yourself the time and hassle and just bring in the mp4’s straight to PPro. Provided you copied the entire folder structure of the SxS card over PPro should just see it and show you the available clips for import. Super easy and no time spent re-wrapping.

    As for export times, it’s all heavily dependent on your system. GPU, CPU, RAM, hard drive speed, how you’re connected to said hard drives (internal, external, RAID, etc.), how much work you’ve done to the timeline through various FX, etc. In the future I would let go of the Compressor route (and I’m an old FCP guy myself) and begin to embrace Adobe’s Media Encoder. I’ve found it to be comparable with Compressor (better in some areas, worse in others). But you mileage may vary….

    @Tom – Exporting speeds depend on several things such as machine specs, hard drive speed (RAID vs. single drive), how many FX are on the clips, etc. What type of GPU do you have in your machine? Is it CUDA capable/enabled (only Nvidia based cards are).

    I agree with Walter, if you’re only concerned with them hearing the interview then just send them a mp3 of the audio. Since you’re not showing them an edited version what’s the benefit of them seeing only 1 angle for 30+ minutes? If you “have to” show them video then a small mp4 using the h264 codec is your best bet. Keep the data rate low and maybe you can email it to them. Or upload a video to a video sharing site and send them the link (YouTube/Vimeo, etc.). Though this method is far less secure than ScreenLight that Walter uses, but it may be ok for this particular project.

    If this is indeed the case, then I’d say Warren’s response is exactly right. Judder – the great downfall of 24p! 🙂

    The articles I referenced are talking about 2 aspects of judder. (1) Judder that exists inherently in 24fps footage. (2) Judder that exists (and can sometimes be mitigated by) converting from 24p to 60i. So you’re dealing with two slightly different but related things.

    I think the “solution” proposed in the first article is good. However, I still shoot a lot of material at 24p. You just have to learn it’s limitations (same with 30p or 60p or 60i).

    What you have sounds about right. If it’s a short clip (i.e. less than 10 minutes) you’ll be fine. If it’s an 1-2 hour presentation then you’ll have to have a pretty fast internet connection to push the finished file up to YouTube. You’re always fighting size vs. quality with internet compression.

    I always point people to Vimeo’s compression guide. It’s got a good walkthrough of the different compression settings and generally accepted good starting points for data rate and resolutions.

  • Resolve 10 has been “announced” but it is not shipping yet. If Blackmagic follows their form from previous years it will likely come out in June or July.

    Given that they are also attempting to ship 2 different camera models by July, a slew of capture cards, monitors, and switchers as well, I’d say they have their hands full currently! However, with the exception of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera they usually hit their summer release schedules following their NAB announcements pretty well (and the problems with the BMCC was at the manufacturing level, which was in some sense beyond their control).

    Sit tight. I’m pretty sure it’ll be out in the near future.

    What were your settings when you shot? It looks like you probably had the shutter speed set too high for the frame rate you were shooting.

    If you’re shooting 24/25 fps your shutter speed should be set at 1/50 (technically for 24fps you should be at 1/48 but DSLR don’t offer that so 1/50 is as close as you can get). If you’re shooting at 30fps you’re shutter should be set at 1/60. Basically the rule is your shutter speed is double the fps, or what is called a 180 degree shutter angle.     You can use a higher than normal shutter speed, but you’ll need to take into account the effect it produces. It may be more or less pronounced depending on the footage you’re shooting. If you have a lot of movement (sports, pans, etc.) you’ll tend to notice it more….which, again, may be intentional. But if you’re looking for smooth and slightly softer (i.e. motion blurred) video then stick to the 180 degree rule.

    If you need to adjust exposure while following the 180 degree rule then you’re looking at f/stop, ISO, and ND filters to control light.
