It sounds like your device control preset isn’t set up right. I would suggest going into the Audio/Video Settings – Device Control Presets and duplicating the one you’re currently using. Then make changes to it by changing the Protocol to other Sony options. Sorry, I don’t know which one to use.

I would use h.264 in compressor. Just create your own settings. Medium quality should be pretty close to the size you need. Then change the frame size to 640×360.

The two applications that really use the graphics cards are Motion and Color. If I were you, I would try only installing Final Cut 6, Compressor and DVD Studio Pro when you install. Then see how it runs.

Shane’s Stock Answer #15: White or Black Canvas

If your canvas is suddenly all white or all black, make sure the canvas or viewer are selected then go to VIEW>CHANNELS and set it to RGB. It might be set to ALPHA.

Did that work? If it did, you owe Shane lunch for the stock answer.

If it’s going to work, that would be the way to do it, with separate start up disks. You don’t have to buy another hard drive. Instead, you could just partition the one you have.

The big question that I can’t answer is if the different hardware would cause problems being installed at the same time.

It’s my understanding that AVC-Intra currently isn’t an editing codec. You can import AVC-Intra to ProRes using Log and Transfer, but from there, it’s all ProRes.

FCP will never playback a still natively. It will either use some sort of previewing or just turn red all together requiring a render. That will depend on your system and sequence settings.

One thing you can check it to see what your RT settings are. On your timeline, to the very far upper left where it says “RT” click on it and select unlimited instead of safe. That might help.

Also, if a warning comes up saying that you’ve dropped frames on playback, deselect the warn next time. It might help too.
