Though that helps a lot, I’m still confused?
Why are you backing them up? So you can use them whenever you want? Just incase the masters burn to the ground?
What format are the tapes on?

It takes a trained eye to see the difference. But I’d at least capture in DV50 for finishing from Beta. You might not be able to point to the difference, but there is a difference and for me, it’s definately worth doing.

I like the extra noise. It reminds me of sitting in the back of a 747. I find it soothing somehow….
What? Did you say something? Hold on, I’m going to go turn my decks, hard drives, computers, fibre switch, and RAID off so I can hear you. (we keep them all in one room and it’s beast in there.)
My opinion. If you’re not using it, turn it off!

Unfortunately, yes. It is true. I haven’t been able to use the edit to tape feature. I’m hoping at when I get the new AJA IO HD, I’ll be able to just put the timecode on the deck to external and lay off masters that way.
It hasn’t really been a problem for us yet because we don’t deliver anything on DVCPROHD and we have a different backup structure for our masters.

What computer are you using? What codec are you using on your timeline?
I’ve never seen a difference in rendering speeds of different type of still image formats. The big difference comes in when the still image files are huge. Adding the extra resolution sometimes only slows you down.
Do you ever change the scale to 60-70% or higher on any of the images? If not, you could probably be find making the images smaller in Photoshop or iPhoto before you bring them in.

It could be any of what you mentioned.
What type of footage are you digitizing? How are you digitizing it (Firewire or Capture Card)? What format are you digitizing too? How fast are your drives (find the AJA system test from AJA.com)?
There are so many thinks that could be impacting this set up.

It’s my experience that the in point of the logged clip will be the “A” frame. (Though I was just trying to teach this to an assistant editor and he had to set the in point a frame earlier to get it to work.)
All we do is select the Easy Setup AJA NTSC 23.98 8-bit (you’ll want to create your own setting to go to DV or DV50). I run a test clip to make sure the in point is set right. If not I adjust it (there are only 5 options, so in the worst case scenario, you’ve only lost 2-3 minutes).

We need a lot more info. There are several different workflows for HD. What format will the short film we shooting on? How will it be delivered? Web, DVD, Festivals, Theatrical (Digital or Film)? Will it be color corrected too? If so, where and with what?
