At NAB I could have sworn they were playing it back in realtime. Check your sequence settings again and compare them to the clips.

  • Sometimes I have to have the Kona card video playback set to 8-bit to play 10-bit footage. I don’t know why, but you might try several different settings from FCP’s video playback menu to see if one works.

    Good luck!

  • I use Final Cut Studio and was having similar results to make SD DVD look good from DVCPROHD footage. I did several downconvert tests to 10-bit uncompressed using Compressor until I found settings that I liked. We delivered those 10-bit masters to a DVD authoring company and the end product looked great.

They key is finding a good way to downconvert. Do you have a Kona card that you could lay off to an SD master? AE should be able to do a good job downconverting. Did you put the HD footage in a HD comp and then downconvert on render or did you put the HD footage in a SD comp and rendered it out? What codec did you render to?

Did you burn it using iDVD? How does the DVD look on your computer at actual size? Does it look the same as it does in FCE, or does it look a little washed out?

[Bullet] “BTW, Color runs perfectly fine on the laptop.”

What laptop do you have? Can you render from DVCPROHD to ProRes?

    Thanks,

[Michael G] “Go crazy and hire a sound recordist perhaps.”

Are you saying that sound guys are crazy? If so, (having done my share of sound mixing) I AGREE 100%!!! They’re wackos!!!

jk (but there is some truth to all jest)

There isn’t a lot that you can do. SoundTrackPro might be able to help it a little, but if you’re audio is clipped (from the mic source) that data is gone. It’s like overexposing video so you lose the highlights.

Try Soundtrack Pro or let an audio mixer listen to it and have him give you his opinion on it.

(without actually hearing it, there is only so much we can suggest.)

You can take Redcode and drop it in FCP6 and it will playback. It only plays back 1K of the image though. From what I saw at NAB, you probably wouldn’t want to edit in Redcode (they wouldn’t even put a dissolve between clips when they showed it). I’d edit in DVCPROHD or ProRes.

And with Color only supporting 2K, there’s really no way to finish at 4K using FCS2.
