  • Glue Tools DPX Codec???

Posted by Kat Baker on May 23, 2007 at 3:20 pm

    Hey all,

I’m trying to demo our FCP system with Glue Tools v2.5.1 and my major question is….can you actually edit a DPX sequence that has been imported into FCP without rendering it?? The codec that is listed when I import a sequence says DPX Digital Film Codec….Well I can’t make my sequences match that…so I have to render. This seems to defeat the purpose of being able to simplify the DPX process.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Kat

At NAB I could have sworn they were playing it back in realtime. Check your sequence settings again and compare them to the clips.

Thanks for responding Russell. They playback in realtime in the Viewer, but as soon as I put them in the Timeline and try to play them back in the Canvas I have to render. I can’t find a sequence setting for DPX files. What am I missing?

    Thanks,

Open the image seq in quicktime.. save a ref movie out.

try dropping that QT ref movie into the timeline..

any luck ? Surely there must be info on GT site?

    I found this:

    https://www.gluetools.com/FUDforum2/index.php?t=msg&th=51&start=0&S=6a50273acfa5cfa408cb26290afe9cbc

It asks the same questions you have. Evidently, you have to render it.

I do know that the Kona 3 will playback DPX sequences in FCP. I’ve seen it for the past two years at NAB without having to render. Walter was acutally demonstrating it this past NAB.

Walter, does Glue Tools work with the Kona 3 or just AJA own DPX translator?

Opening the dpx sequence in QT gives me the same problem. I save a ref movie and the drop it into FCP and the codec still says “DPX Digital Film.” We really are trying to do tapeless workflow from film here, but if I can’t playback the files without rendering it would seem to me that it defeats the purpose…..speed-wise.

I’ve also tried to batch convert the sequences in Silverstack and to convert a 47,000 frame sequence took over an hour on a Quad G5 with a 14TB xserve RAID striped 5+0. It still seems to be faster to injest from DBeta/HDCAM/DVCAM dailies then to do an offline edit with dpx files.

We have a Kona LHe, so if the Kona 3 will playback the dpx sequences then maybe we should just finally upgrade.

    Ugh…so frustrating.

Thanks so much for all your help!

[Russell Lasson] “Walter, does Glue Tools work with the Kona 3 or just AJA own DPX translator?”

That would be a Gary question.

Yes GT works with all of the Kona Cards, I use it regularly set your project to be the Aja 10bit log codec and it should be able to play back as long as your drives are fast enough.
for 2K 10bit LOG DPX files you need an array capable of playing back at over 250MBps or better.

Try this if you are still having an issue.

Use the AJA Dpx to QT converter for the import and make sure that you match your seq settings when you do the conversion THEN use the Glue Tools to control your output, that might be a little easier for a first time user.

But contact Rob at GT he is a great guy and very responsive to customer needs

These are just NTSC scans, not even 2K. When you say use Glue Tools to control my output what do mean exactly? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

    Thanks,

[Kat Baker] “These are just NTSC scans, not even 2K. “

    Stop right here.

this is the problem, DPX files are expected to be imported as as 2K or 1080 10bit log files and you are not starting anywhere close to there.

This is not going to work, not with 4×3 NTSC video masters (and how did you make them DPX)

    Do yourself a favor,
create some proper files in Motion or AE then start the process over.

Sorry…didn’t mean to say scans…..they were dpx sequences created by transfering 16mm film from our Ursa Diamond telecine through our DaVinci 2K and then converted and saved as dpx via Max-T’s Sledgehammer HDIO.

So NTSC dpx files are a no go….hhhmmm…interesting. Had no idea.
